I believe 10 years is too long for a contract. It allows a team to gamble on locking up a good player for much less (sometimes substantially less) than market value. Savvy owners can almost have a kind of monopoly on good players if this gamble pays off for multiple players at the same time.
The risk of this tactic is the player could be bad and not worth the contract. However, this can be negated by simply trading them in a salary dump situation. I am even more supportive of this today after seeing how much money teams have sitting around. The downside is much less impactful when 2/3 of the teams could take on the potential "bad contract".
One benefit of this change would be a much more diversified free agent market as contracts would expire more often.
And finally, most players become eligible for a major league extension between 24-26. This would mean you would still be able to lock up your desired players through most (if not all) of their prime years.
