Article By: SnealShiesty

The Duke Blue Devils kicked off the season with an away game against the Washington Huskies. The Blue Devils force a punt from the Huskies on the opening drive and follow that up with a 9 play scoring drive to take a 7-0 lead in the first. Duke forces a second straight punt and the Washington special teams comes up big pinning Duke inside their own 5. Maalik Murphy tries to thread the needle on a 3rd and long and has the pass intercepted off a receivers hands and taken back for a game tying touchdown.

The very next drive a Washington defender cuts off a route and intercepts Murphy, leading to a go ahead TD for the Huskies. Dukes offense struggles to get anything going the rest of the first half while the Washington offense found the endzone one more time to take a 21-7 lead into halftime. The 3rd quarter was mostly all defense with a missed FG from Washington and then a late TD run from Duke RB Quran Boyd to cut the lead to 7 with 34 seconds left in the quarter.

Washington opens up the 4th quarter marching down the field for a TD followed by a missed extra point. The lead is 13 and Duke needing a quick score to make it a one possession game. They do just that, scoring a TD in under 2 minutes to cut the lead to 6. The Blue Devils get the stop they need on defense but yet again the Washington special teams comes up clutch downing the ball on the 3 yard line. The Huskies send a blitz and get home for a safety to make it an 8 point game.

Duke gets one more chance to go tie the game up getting the ball back with 1:40 left on the clock. Maalik Murphy ends up throwing his 3rd interception of the game to seal the victory for Washington. A tight game to the end and the Washington defense and special teams come up with some clutch plays to fend off the Blue Devils comeback attempt.

Solid game from both teams and Duke looks to bounce back next week with Oklahoma coming to town for their home opener.
