Southern Miss is perfect through the first 3 weeks after upsetting Top 10 Virginia Tech, 30-27. After getting zero respect in the Top 25, Coach Huskerskev figures his team will just be on the outskirts when the next poll is released. "It seems every place I go we don't get an ounce of notice in preseason polls, but we like it that way. No one ever expects much out of us and normally by mid-season we are normally solidly in the Top 25. We have a long long ways to go, but couldn't have scripted a better start to the season," Coach Huskerkev stated. The next 3 games are Louisville, Marshall and East Carolina. They are all winnable games, but unless the defense can figure a few things out they could just as easily be losses.
Here is the first 3 weeks in review.
Week 1 - Southern Miss plays great in all aspects of the game in a 42-10 dismantling of the Eastern Michigan Eagles. Quarterback Austin Davis went wild, 9-12 passing for 189 yards and 3 scores. He also rushed for another 114 yards on just 3 attempts, including a 85 touchdown run.
Week 2 - Southern Miss traveled to Washington St. and came away with a hard fought 34-29 win. The Cougars will be tough this year as they just wouldn't go away. Austin Davis once again led the way going 27-36 397 yards, 4 td's and 2 interceptions.
Week 3 - A trip to Blacksburg comes out victorious for Souther Miss as they knock off the Hokies 30-27. On paper, this is the most talented team Southern Miss will face this season. The Golden Eagles were fortunate to steal this win as Virginia Tech Tyrod Taylor threw just too many errant passes. Running back Tracy Lampley was the difference maker. He ran the ball 18 times for 116 yards and 1 touchdown. He also caught 2 balls for 92 yards, including an 87 yard touchdown on a screen pass.
