Southern Miss (6-0) travels to Tennessee to take on Memphis (6-0). The Tigers offense has been nearly flawless this season and will look to continue their ways against the sorry defense of the Golden Eagles. Quarterback Tyler Bass has put up some of the most impressive stats in the nation. Bass has completed 70% of his passes with 15 touchdowns and no interceptions. This offense is a dual threat though as running back Lance Smith has rushed for 774 yards (7.7 avg) and 8 touchdowns already this season.
For Southern Miss, the offense is just as impressive but they have been prone to turn the ball over a little more. Quarterback Austin Davis has completed 71% of his passes with 16 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. Tracy Lampley is no pushover in the backfield either. Lampley has rushed for 641 yards (8.2 avg) and 7 touchdowns. DeAndre Brown has hauled in 10 touchdown receptions on 36 receptions.
Which defense will come to play? So far, the Memphis defense has the upper hand. S. Miss has only held one opponent under 24 points. Memphis has controlled opposing offenses better allowing 4 of 6 opponents under 24 points.
Special teams could haunt Southern Miss. Twice this season they have allowed opponents to return 2 kicks for touchdowns and I think 5 total touchdowns on kick returns allowed. Pretty pathetic. All of these numbers spell trouble for S. Miss. Hopefully they can get a few break breaks to pull off this one.
