A Chat with Cougnix: The longest active tenure Dynasty.

In the digital fields of the NCAA Dynasty League (NDL), where competition is fierce and dedication runs deep, one coach stands out for his remarkable tenure and unwavering commitment. Meet Coach Cougnix, the mastermind behind the Washington State Cougars, who is embarking on his 9th season at the helm, marking his 8th consecutive year with the team. With a coaching career that spans 17 seasons and includes leading his team to bowl games eight times, Coach Cougnix is the longest-serving active coach of a same team in the league. But who is the man behind the controller?

Personal Background
At 48 years old, Coach Cougnix is a married father of three boys and a recently retired high school athletic director from Fife, WA. His career in sports is illustrious, having just celebrated his 300th win as a baseball coach after 21 years on the diamond. His life off the virtual field is no less impressive, but gaming remains his primary hobby and passion.

NDL Journey
Coach Cougnix’s journey to the NDL began through a series of serendipitous events. Having been part of multiple Madden leagues such as XMG and Madden Wars, and active on Gaming Tailgate, a friend mentioned a college league that piqued his interest. “I rarely kept up playing NCAA because everyone jumped to Madden. So I joined the farm, played less than a season, and got the call up to take over Syracuse. The rest is history,” he recalls.

What Keeps Him Going
When asked about what he enjoys most about the NDL, Coach Cougnix highlights the competition and consistency of the league. These elements have kept him engaged and returning season after season. When asked about Washington State specifically, “When the degree in my office says 'Washington State University,' you have a pull to your school! Luckily, I'm not awesome at the game, and WSU has always had a manageable win goal, so I keep coming back!” he explains.

Coaching Highlights and Rivalries
Throughout his career, Coach Cougnix has achieved significant milestones. One of his proudest accomplishments was having back-to-back 2nd team All-Americans at Temple. While his memory isn’t the sharpest when it comes to rivalries, he fondly remembers intense matchups against oldschoola, vicktim, and Black Rain. As for this year, he’s looking forward to the Pac-12 Championship, confidently asserting, “Guaranteed in!!”

Expectations and Goals
As the new season unfolds, Coach Cougnix has tempered expectations. “Hopefully .500 or better. Haven’t played a football game in a while, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I go Ofer!” he jokes. His primary goal is to stay engaged and see if he still has what it takes to lead his team effectively. Known for his multiple offense schemes, he candidly admits, “I suck at D, so it doesn’t matter.”

Coaching Philosophy
Coach Cougnix’s coaching philosophy is straightforward yet effective: “Run the ball and not throw picks.” This simple mantra has guided him through numerous seasons and countless games.

Final Thoughts
While Coach Cougnix remains a bit of an enigma, preferring to keep some things private with a “No Comment,” his impact on the NDL and the Washington State Cougars is undeniable. His dedication, humor, and competitive spirit continue to inspire both his players and fellow coaches.

As we gear up for another exciting season, the NDL is fortunate to have such a resilient and passionate coach in its ranks. Here’s to Coach Cougnix and another thrilling year with the Washington State Cougars!
