San Marcos, TX – The Houston Cougars delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday evening, behind a combination of explosive offense and stifling defense, the Cougars surged to a resounding 56-21 victory, bouncing back from a tough loss to the North Carolina St. Wolfpack the previous week.
From the outset, the Cougars set the tone, capitalizing on six Texas State turnovers and scoring on nearly every possession in the first half. Quarterback Donovan Smith showcased his precision, completing 21 of 25 passes for 277 yards, with several big plays that kept the Bobcat defense on its heels. Smith’s efficient performance was pivotal in helping Houston build a commanding 42-7 lead by halftime.
The Cougars’ offense was firing on all cylinders, with a balanced attack that effectively mixed the pass and the run. Running back Parker Jenkins was instrumental in the second half, as Houston shifted its strategy to a more conservative ground game to maintain control of the game and allow Smith to rest. Jenkins’ contributions on the ground helped sustain drives and chew up the clock, further demoralizing the Bobcats.
Coach Rags praised his team’s all-around effort in the victory. “It was a nice rebound win after the tough road loss to the Wolfpack. I thought we played well in all phases, and it showed on the scoreboard,” he said. The coach expressed particular satisfaction with his team's ability to force turnovers while maintaining possession themselves. “I was very happy we forced them to turn the ball over, and WE DIDN'T! Always a good sign.”
The Cougars did not let off the gas in the second quarter, with Smith consistently moving the chains. The defense, led by a ferocious front line, made life difficult for Texas State quarterback Jordan McCloud who struggled to find his rhythm throughout the game.
Yragha remained level-headed in his post-game comments, emphasizing the need for the team to stay grounded. “Not too high, nor too low. Celebrate tonight, and next up!” He also took a moment to acknowledge Texas State’s coach, Randall aka “RanDawg”, expressing his respect for the program and wishing them success as the season progresses.
