Welcome to our 2nd release of the Big XII Power Rankings. There still hasn't been much in-conference activity but we're starting to get into that now and we'll be able to separate out the pretenders from the contenders.
There has been some shifting around of teams from last week. If you don't like where you're at....show me you deserve to be higher!
West Virginia Mountaineers 0-4 (0-2) - It's been a rough start for the 'eers. Facing #1 Kansas so early in the season never works out well for anyone though. Coach Lone will continue to look for his first win of the season with Okie State, Iowa State, and Pitt on the schedule.
Arizona State Sun Devils 0-2 (0-1) - Nothing has changed here as we're still waiting on some games to be played. We simply don't have a clear picture of what the Sun Devils are yet.
BYU Cougars 1-3 (0-2) - Loses to K State and Baylor. After their blowout win against Utah State we just haven't seen anything that suggest the Stormin' Mormons will be competitive.
Houston Cougars 2-3 (0-2) - The high scoring Coogs have been grounded of late with both Cincy and TCU holding them to two TD's each. They get a bye week but then what one has to assume will be an ugly game against Kansas.
UCF Knights 0-4 (0-2) - Another close game for the Knights losing by 4 to a tough Colorado squad. When you consider they lost by a combined 11 points against Tennessee and Colorado you know they'll eventually get this straightened out. Despite being winless they still seem to be a stronger team than the ones below them.
Oklahoma State Cowboys 3-2 (1-2) - Back to back loses vs. Utah and K State but turned it around with a win over the bottom ranked team in the league. That's not going to move you up the rankings.
Texas Tech Red Raiders 3-3 (2-1) - Handled by Cincy fairly easily but then back to their high flying ways against a surprising Arizona squad. The defense is preventing them from being higher though.
Utah Utes 2-1 (1-1) - A loss to Arizona on the road. That's simply a loss they couldn't afford. The Utes will have to be on their toes from here on out. Cannot afford another loss if they want into the championship game at the end of conference play.
Arizona Wildcats 2-2 (1-1) - Pulled the upset over Utah and find themselves moving up 3 spots. It's getting hard to determine the cluster of teams in the middle of the pack.
Iowa State Cyclones 2-1 (0-1) - Did just lose to Baylor to drop them to 0-1 in-conference and I hate to drop too far but can't justify keeping them too high either when they're winless in conference.
Colorado Buffaloes 3-1 (1-1) - Struggled against UCF. Have I over-rated this team for the 2nd season in a row? Probably need to be a little higher but these other teams are good too.
TCU Horned Frogs 4-1 (2-1) - Were looking really strong, then Kansas happened. It'll be imperative for them to not dwell on that loss. Several really good matchups coming at them quickly. I tend to not overly penalize teams for losing to Kansas so just a small drop here.
Kansas State Wildcats 3-1 (2-0) - Three straight for the Wildcats but next up is Colorado. Time to see how real this K State squad is.
Cincinnati Bearcats 3-1 (2-0) - They do have 3 wins and no in-conference loses but I'd like to see more from them against top tier teams. Unfortunately we won't get that until Week 9.
Baylor Bears 6-0 (3-0) - Was ready to bump them up to #1 for the week after beating Iowa State, but then the Kansas TCU game happened. Baylor is right there though. There's some potential bumps on the schedule but that Week 14 matchup is looming large.
Kansas Jayhawks 5-0 (2-0) - Demolished a strong TCU team to show the conference that he is still king of the hill. Will face a struggling Houston squad then the ranked Utah squad that likes to call him out in live chat!
