As Block 2 (Weeks 3 & 4) open in the NDL the Big XII sees a lot of its teams participating in rivalry games in W3 and a lot of teams with byes in W4. Surprisingly though, despite all of the rivalry games in W3, it's a Big XII matchup that gets the spotlight in W3.
Week 3 Showdown: #13 Central Florida 2-0 (0-0) vs. Texas Christian 1-0 (0-0)
This matchup marks an exciting early season clash between two of the first teams in the Big XII to face off. Both Central Florida and Texas Christian have potent offenses, but they rely on distinctly different styles of play.
Central Florida:
UCF enters the game 2-0, having scored a total of 86 points in their first two games. Their offensive game has been built around a triple-option attack, which has been highly effective in these early games. This style of offense relies heavily on running the ball, particularly with the backs, and is designed to keep defenses on their heels by forcing them to make quick, reactive decisions.
Offensive Strength: The triple-option has been hard for opponents to contain so far, and it has allowed UCF to control the clock and create favorable matchups on the ground. Against a TCU defense that isn’t necessarily known for its strength, this running attack could cause problems, especially if UCF’s ball-handling and decision-making stay sharp.
Defensive Performance: While the offense has been a clear focus, UCF’s defense will face a challenge in this matchup. The Knights’ defense hasn’t been mentioned as a major strength, but it will need to step up to slow down TCU’s high-flying aerial game.
Texas Christian:
Record & Performance: TCU enters the game undefeated at 1-0, with a dominant win over Arkansas State. This early victory highlights the continued strength of TCU’s passing attack, led by a solid quarterback and skilled receivers. This offense has been firing on all cylinders and has the potential to put up big numbers through the air.
Offensive Strength: TCU’s aerial attack is poised to give UCF's defense trouble. TCU’s ability to stretch the field with deep passes and quick strikes will put pressure on UCF’s secondary. However, TCU will need to adjust to UCF’s strong run game and potentially control the tempo to avoid getting stuck in a back-and-forth shootout.
Defensive Performance: Historically, TCU has not been known for having a particularly strong defense, and that could be a major factor in this game. While they did hold their own in their opening game, they will have to step up in a significant way against the dynamic and run-heavy offense of UCF. If they can't contain the triple-option, it could be a long game for the Horned Frogs.
What to Expect:
UCF’s Triple Option vs. TCU’s Pass Defense: The biggest clash here will be UCF’s ground game versus TCU’s passing game. If TCU can’t effectively slow down UCF’s running attack, it will be hard for them to get into a rhythm offensively. Conversely, if UCF struggles to defend the air game, they could find themselves in a high-scoring contest.
Tempo & Time of Possession: UCF’s offense is designed to grind out clock and wear down defenses. If they can keep TCU’s offense off the field by running the ball effectively, they’ll have the advantage. TCU, on the other hand, will look to speed up the game and take advantage of their aerial prowess.
Turnovers: Both teams will need to be cautious with the ball. UCF’s style puts a lot of pressure on ball security, while TCU’s high-risk, high-reward passing attack could be prone to mistakes if the UCF defense is able to create turnovers.

Week 4 Showdown: Texas Christian 1-0 (0-0) vs. Southern Methodist 0-2 (0-0)
This is a highly anticipated matchup, especially given the animosity stemming from last season’s game between these two teams. TCU emerged victorious in the 38-27 contest, but this time, Southern Methodist will be looking for redemption and revenge. Let’s break down what to expect
Texas Christian:
Record & Performance: TCU enters the game with a 1-0 record after a dominant win over Arkansas State in Week 2. The Horned Frogs have been led by their potent passing attack, which is one of their primary strengths. Their offense has been explosive, and they’ll look to continue that trend by airing it out against SMU’s defense.
Offensive Strength: TCU’s passing game will likely be their main weapon in this matchup. With a solid quarterback and skilled receivers, TCU will attempt to stretch the field and score quickly. Their ability to execute deep throws and maintain an up-tempo offense will be key, especially considering that SMU has shown vulnerability in the secondary.
Defensive Concerns: While TCU is known for its offensive firepower, their defense could be a potential weak point, especially if SMU is able to keep up the pace offensively. TCU will need to improve their defensive consistency to avoid giving up too many points, as SMU has shown they can put up numbers.
Southern Methodist:
Record & Performance: SMU enters the game at 0-2, which is a surprising start for a team that has had an efficient offense. Despite being winless, the Mustangs have managed to put up points, which suggests that their offense is not the issue. However, they will need to focus on making improvements, especially defensively, to have a chance against TCU’s high-powered passing attack.
Offensive Strength: The SMU offense has been putting up solid numbers, but in this game, they may need to be even more prolific to keep pace with TCU. SMU has the potential to score, but they will need to be more dynamic to have a shot at pulling off the upset. Their quarterback and skill players will need to execute efficiently and take advantage of any defensive lapses from TCU.
Defensive Challenge: The key issue for SMU in this matchup is their defense. With TCU’s strong aerial game, SMU will need to find ways to disrupt TCU’s passing attack, whether through pass rush or coverage schemes. The Mustangs cannot afford to give up big plays through the air and will need to make key stops if they hope to stay competitive in the game.
What to Expect:
TCU’s Passing Attack vs. SMU’s Defense: TCU’s ability to throw the ball will be the focal point of this game. SMU's defense, which has struggled early in the season, must find a way to contain TCU’s aerial offense. If SMU cannot slow down TCU’s passing game, it could be a long day for the Mustangs.
SMU’s Offense vs. TCU’s Defense: While TCU's offense is the stronger unit, SMU’s offense has been capable of scoring. However, they’ll need to up their game to put enough pressure on TCU’s defense. SMU’s offense must capitalize on any opportunities to keep the score competitive and force TCU into uncomfortable situations.
Turnovers and Big Plays: Both teams will need to avoid turnovers, as mistakes could shift momentum quickly in such a high-stakes, high-tempo game. Big plays could play a decisive role, especially for TCU, which thrives on explosive passing plays.
Emotional Motivation: Given the animosity from last season's matchup, this game has an added emotional element. SMU will be motivated by the desire for revenge, while TCU will be looking to assert their dominance once again. The emotional intensity of the game could impact the flow of play, especially in critical moments.
