Early Misses Prove Costly for Liberty

Article By: oldmanwobbles

Liberty's hopes for a strong start to the OldManWobbles era took another hit. Missed opportunities and untimely defense led to a 23-21 loss at New Mexico State, dropping the Flames to 0-2.

Two missed field goals by kicker Colin Karhu in the first quarter proved decisive, as Liberty's offense otherwise matched NMSU blow-for-blow in total yardage (397 each) and first downs (20-19).

Kaidon Salter showed dual-threat ability, passing for 247 yards and two touchdowns while adding 103 rushing yards on 10 carries. Treon Sibley emerged as his favorite target, hauling in 6 catches for 145 yards and a score.

NMSU quarterback Parker Awad countered with 252 passing yards and two touchdowns, while Seth McGowan shouldered the load with 98 hard-earned yards on 29 carries.

Liberty's defense, led by A Khori Jones' 12 tackles and Amarian Williams' two interceptions, contained NMSU's ground game but struggled with third down stops, allowing 7 of 15 conversions.

"Those early misses loomed large," Coach OldManWobbles might have reflected. "With our conference title aspirations, starting 0-2 wasn't in the plans. We need to right this ship quickly."

The preseason goal of 9 wins and a conference championship now faces an uphill battle, as Liberty's margin for error has essentially vanished just two weeks into the season.
