Block 3 Big XII Power Rankings: Is The Cream Rising?
As we roll into Block 3 of the Big XII Power Rankings, the conference's heavyweights continue to assert their dominance, but we're starting to see some mild surprises from other teams making unexpected moves up the standings. While the top dogs have held their ground, the question looms: Can these upstarts keep their momentum and challenge for a spot at the top, or will they simply end up scouring for scraps as the season wears on? With every game, the balance of power is shifting ever so slightly, and the true contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the pack. It’s shaping up to be an intriguing stretch of the season—one that could either solidify the usual suspects or pave the way for new challengers to emerge.
(-2) 16. Baylor Bears 0-0 (0-0)
Hello? Anyone there? Baylor's season is off to a slow start, and it looks like they’re still waiting for the bus to show up. Can they wake up, or will they be perpetually stuck in neutral?
(-3) 15. BYU Cougars 0-4 (0-1)
Here we go again… The Cougars are no strangers to tough starts, but will they figure it out faster than last season? Time to hit the panic button, or is there still hope for a second-half surge?
(-1) 14. Oklahoma State 0-3 (0-1)
It’s been a rough ride for Okie State, but let’s not hit the panic button just yet. Two of their losses are to Top 25 teams, so they might just be waiting for the real season to start. Stay tuned…
(+3) 13. West Virginia Mountaineers 0-1 (0-0)
Technically 0-1, but we’re feeling generous. The Mountaineers lost, but hey, they didn't lose as much as other teams, so up they go! They're like the team that showed up at the party but didn’t drink too much.
(+3) 12. Arizona State Sun Devils 0-1 (0-1)
Another team on the move despite an L. Apparently, we’re just ranking based on vibes now. Arizona State may have lost, but they’ve got a good attitude about it. Up you go, Sun Devils!
(-4) 11. Arizona Wildcats 0-2 (0-0)
Not the bounce-back they were hoping for after that heartbreaker against USC. But hey, Iowa’s no slouch, so it’s not the end of the world. Arizona’s got time, but they need to find a way to get it together—quick.
(-) 10. Iowa State Cyclones 0-1 (0-0)
Holding steady for now. It’s early, but the Cyclones are still in the mix. We’ll see what happens after a couple more games. Stay tuned.
(+2) 9. Texas Tech Red Raiders 1-3 (1-0)
Red Raiders finally got their first conference win, but that’s just one bright spot in a sea of losses. Still, they’ve faced some tough opponents (#22, #2, and a notoriously difficult coach to beat). This team won’t stay at the bottom for long.
(+1) 8. Houston Cougars 1-2 (0-1)
They won a Texas showdown, but then got steamrolled by a Big XII foe. What's next for Houston? At this rate, they might just go for a "win one, lose one" approach. Not ideal, but it’s something.
(-) 7. Kansas Jayhawks 1-2 (1-0)
Kansas took a beating from Tennessee and barely squeaked past West Virginia. Welcome to the new Kansas—where the wins come with a side of frustration. In three games, they’ve racked up as many losses as they did in two entire seasons. Progress?
(-1) 6. Kansas State Wildcats 2-0 (1-0)
Still undefeated, but there’s not much meat on the bone in terms of competition. Kansas State looks solid, but until they face some tougher teams, they’re not moving up too far. For now, enjoy the win streak, Wildcats!
(-1) 5. TCU Horned Frogs 3-1 (0-1)
TCU bounced back with a solid win in the Iron Skill rivalry, but that beatdown from UCF still stings. They’ve had solid victories, but that loss was a wake-up call. Let’s see if they can stay focused and avoid a slip-up before the big games ahead.
(+2) 4. Cincinnati Bearcats 3-1 (1-0)
Cincinnati might’ve started rocky, but they’ve figured it out, and now they’re playing like a team that can score at will. Watch out, defenses—they're coming for you. The Bearcats are a force to be reckoned with.
(-) 3. Utah Utes 2-0 (1-0)
We almost swapped Utah and Cincinnati, but Utah’s done enough to keep their spot for now. A dominating win over Oklahoma State is nice, and they should handle Utah State with ease. The real question: can Arizona step up and pose a challenge?
(-) 2. UCF Knights 3-0 (1-0)
All W's have come by double digits, and UCF’s offense is like a steamroller on overdrive. They’ve been crushing everyone, but this week they’ve got a chance to take the #1 spot. Time to earn some serious respect.
(-) 1. Colorado Buffaloes 3-0 (0-0)
Let’s spell it out: B.L.O.W.O.U.T.S. The Buffs are undefeated, and their defense has been elite. They’ve been flexing all season, but now they’ve got to keep it up to stay at the top. Can they survive Block 3 and remain the team to beat?
