The Red River Showdown never disappoints, and this season’s clash brings plenty of intrigue.
On one sideline, #18 Oklahoma and coach Thatdude15 come in undefeated but oddly quiet — only two games played through six weeks, leaving many around the NDL wondering where the Sooners really stand. On the other, #1 Texas under Jiggy Jrod is rolling, undefeated at 5-0, and looking every bit like the top team in the country.
History also lingers: last season, Jiggy threw an unthinkable 7 interceptions against OU, handing the Sooners a shocking upset win. He hasn’t forgotten — and now has a chance to flip the script on the biggest stage of the year.
Oklahoma Sooners Outlook
At 2-0, Oklahoma’s season has been strange. The Sooners haven’t played much, but when they have, they’ve shown flashes of potential.
QB John Mateer has been efficient in limited action: 468 yards, 4 TDs, and 2 INTs on 32 completions. He’ll need to protect the ball against Texas’ suffocating defense.
RB Taylor Tatum has seen only 17 carries but turned them into 91 yards and a TD. Expect him to see more work if OU wants to slow down the Texas pass rush.
WR Deion Burks is a playmaker, posting 132 yards and a TD on 6 catches. He’ll need to stretch the field to open things up for the offense.
The concern? OU hasn’t shown consistent production yet. Their defense hasn’t really been tested, and they’ll need to prove they can slow down a Texas offense averaging nearly 45 PPG.
Texas Longhorns Outlook
Texas has been nothing short of dominant. Jiggy’s Longhorns are steamrolling opponents, winning by an average margin of 26 points per game.
QB Arch Manning has been electric, throwing for 1,944 yards, 16 TDs, and just 3 INTs while completing 83% of his passes. He’s been in complete command of the offense.
RB Jerrick Gibson brings balance, rushing for 401 yards and 5 TDs on 48 carries. His ability to break long runs (five 20+ yard gains) forces defenses to respect the ground game.
WR Ryan Wingo has been the deep threat every QB dreams of: 502 yards, 4 TDs, and 220 YAC on just 19 catches. He stretches defenses and consistently flips field position.
Defensively, Texas has been lights out — giving up just 17.6 PPG while forcing teams into mistakes early and often. Their 94-rated defense is a nightmare matchup for OU’s still-unproven offense.
Key Matchups to Watch
Mateer vs. Texas Pass Rush: If OU’s QB can’t handle the heat, this could spiral quickly.
Wingo vs. OU Secondary: Wingo has been a game-breaker all year. If Oklahoma can’t contain him, expect multiple explosive touchdowns.
Turnovers: Last year’s game was decided by Jiggy’s 7 INTs. This year, ball security will again determine whether OU has any chance to pull off another shocker.
Coaching Battle
Thatdude15 has been consistent with strong stints at Ball State and UNC before taking over Oklahoma last season. His teams are always competitive, but the lack of games played this year leaves a big question mark.
Jiggy Jrod is one of the NDL’s elite. With a 84-9 career record, two national championships, and one of the most dominant dynasties the league has seen, he’s the standard every coach measures against. Still, the memory of last year’s OU disaster looms.
This game isn’t just about standings — it’s about revenge, pride, and bragging rights in one of the league’s fiercest rivalries.
Prediction
Oklahoma will enter with little pressure — they’re the underdog, they haven’t played much, and everyone expects Texas to dominate. But that can be dangerous. If Mateer protects the ball and Burks lands a couple of deep shots, the Sooners could make this interesting.
That said, Texas is simply on another level right now. Arch Manning is locked in, the defense is suffocating, and Jiggy hasn’t forgotten last year’s humiliation. This time, the Longhorns make a statement.
Projected Score: Texas 42, Oklahoma 17
Texas stays undefeated, keeps the #1 spot, and exorcises last season’s Red River demons in emphatic fashion.
