Fans were starting to get restless this season. There were even rumors of a firing coming soon for Coach Taruncheel. The Tar Heels started the season 0-4 and all 4 losses were at home. Most games were played close, but that still did not equate to a victory. The Heels were staring at an 0-5 start with #20 Vanderbilt coming to town. The Tar Heels were able to get on the board first with a 5 yd run by Gause and took a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. They added another score on a scramble by Lopez to go up 14-0. Vandy answered with a 23 yd run by Alexander to cut the lead to 14-7. With about 40 seconds left until the half, Lopez was able to connect with Jake Johnson for a 21 yd pass and that made it 21-7. The second half started and Vanderbilt was able to get a 5 yd run by Alexander and the 3rd quarter ended with UNC up 21-14. Early in the 4th quarter Gause had a 20 yd TD run that pushed the lead back up to 14. Verhoff added a 37 yd FG with 2:20 remaining to make the final score UNC 31 and Vanderbilt 14.
"We had a pretty solid game. Lopez did a good job of controlling the game and limited turnovers. He was able to find a variety of receivers with 7 different players catching at least 1 pass. The running game was still a litle slow and will need to improve for us to taste more success. The defense played solid, but needs to be aware of the read option and not get out of position. Overall, I am pleased with the way we played," replied Coach Taruncheel.
There is still more to be done this season and if Coach wants to stay in town, he needs to keep winning!
