it literally scares the fuck out of me. in my entire life i've had a 'don't talk politics/don't talk religion' policy. and while i'm not really trying to get into a political debate as much as i am trying to understand how people could think that way, its got me riled up enough to at least speak up not only here but to others in my world who support the guy.
the only thing i can think of is that our generation is so entitled and comfortable at this point that the drive to be great is overcome by the need to be comfortable. and i don't mean that as a knock on anyone who supports him, but i really don't think people understand the ramifications of supporting that type of belief.
when societies get older/more mature they lose the passion to be great because things are 'easier' for them. the same way a 2nd or 3rd generation american probably isn't as motivated to take risk/grow as our ancestors who came over here with (mostly) nothing were willing to risk their lives for an opportunity. our generation now is PETRIFIED of risk. when i talk to my friends/younger clients about risk they basically universally are petrified of it, they don't want it, they just want to be 'safe'. It's a societal change that is discouraging to me. we need innovators and risk takers and people who want to be better. thats how jobs are created, thats how families achieve a better future generation than the past and thats how innovative new businesses start.
but its not a static choice. once you take that choice to downplay capitalism and free markets, you begin to get overtaken by other countries or groups with more passion that is willing to take on risk. just like a disruptive and innovative business overtakes an older slower growing one. so by deciding we want this type of guy in charge we're basically giving up on being great. maybe thats a bit of hyperbole to some, but i truly believe it. if you want to understand more on the concept of this, you can watch any speech by Clay Christensen about the topic of disruptive innovation and just equate it to our society and economy.
