Sun Devils Score Game Winner With :59 Left
The Arizona State Sun Devils opened up the season playing host to the Georgia Bulldogs. Both teams experienced success last season, but the Sun Devils came in with a new coach that looked to keep up with Georgia's returning coach.
Arizona State opened the game receiving the kick and looked to get the crowd in the game early. The long drive may not have gotten the crowd fired up along the way, but when Grice crossed the goal line from five yards out they were in full throat. Georgia quickly quieted the crowd, however, when they answered with a 59 yard touchdown run by Gurley. The Sun Devils put the crowd right back in it when their next drive resulted in points on Eubank's 4 yard touchdown pass to Strong. The Sun Devils' defense would hold the Bulldogs to a three and out and the offense went right back to work. Arizona State would increase its lead to 21-7 when Eubank found Strong for the second time in the half, this time from 5 yards out. Not phased, Georgia put together a long drive that cut the Arizona State lead to 7 with a Murray to Mitchell 5 yard touchdown. With under a minute to go, ASU didn't manage the clock well as they went three and out and gave Georgia the ball back. The Bulldogs would take advantage as they got into field goal range and Morgan connected from 42 yards out. The Sun Devils lead was 21-17.
Georgia got the ball to start the second half and took their first lead of the game when Murray connected with Marshall from 8 yards out. Arizona State took the lead right back, on their next drive, on a Eubank to Agweune 15 yard touchdown. Arizona State took 28-24 lead into the fourth quarter. It didn't last long though, because Georgia marched down the field and Gurley's 3 yard touchdown gave the Bulldogs a 31-28 lead. Arizona State's next drive would eat up yardage and clock as they put together a 12 play drive that covered 78 yards that was capped off by Grice's 5 yard touchdown run. The Sun Devils lead was 35-31 and Georgia had :56 seconds and two timeouts to go 80 yards. The Bulldogs would get 16 yards but four plays into the drive Murray would get picked off by Earley and the Sun Devils were able to kneel out the clock for the win.
