Defense comes up big in the fourth quarter to secure the victory
North Carolina held off a tough Wisconsin team to win their home opener and start the season 1- 0. The game was a defensive struggle throughout with neither team able to pull away from the other. Each of the offenses were plagued with dropped passes and the inability to run the ball effectively.
Wisconsin opened the scoring in the first quarter when they capitalized on a Brynn Renner interception. Kyle French kicked a 54 yard field goal to give the Badgers the 3 - 0 lead after their drive stalled after picking up only 1 first down.
UNC was able to answer in the second quarter with a Thomas Moore 49 yard field goal. Moore gave the Tar Heels the lead with a 23 yard field goal later in the quarter.
Wisconsin answered just before half time with a 31 yard field goal and the teams went into the locker room tied at 6.
The second half started with UNC being able to move the ball on the ground as AJ Blue started picking up big chunks of yardage. Blue finished the game with 92 yards on 14 carries. The more balanced offense allowed UNC to drive down and score the first touchdown of the game and take a 13 - 6 lead.
Wisconsin answered right back with a touchdown of their own when Tanner McEvoy connected with Jeff Duckworth for 19 yards. That put the score at 13 - 13 with the game about to enter the fourth quarter.
North Carolina answered the bell for the home crowd and scored on their opening possession of the fourth quarter and took a 20 - 13 lead. Tapley caught his second td pass making a one handed grab over the defenders shoulder for a 3 yard score.
Wisconsin tried to answer but an ill advised throw into double coverage resulted in a Sam Smiley interception. Wisconsin did hold UNC to a 3 and out and was able to get the ball back with 2:00 remaining in regulation.
The UNC defense stepped up again and recorded a sack on 3rd down to set the down and distance at fourth and 23. The secondary knocked down the fourth down prayer and North Carolina was able to take a knee and run the clock out.
