Wildcats fall to #23 Auburn

Late Tiger touchdown seals game

AUBURN, Ala. - 23rd-ranked Auburn scored 10 fourth quarter points, as they pulled away from Northwestern late in the game for a 38-24 victory. The Tigers improved to 4-1, while the Wildcats dropped to 0-2.



Auburn struck first, as T. Mason plowed in from seven-yards out with 4:41 to play in the first quarter, as the Tigers took a 7-0 lead. A quick three-and-out for the Wildcats led to the Tigers second touchdown of the quarter. As time expired in the opening frame, Mason scored from 10-yards out for a 14-0 Tiger lead.



After a Wildcat punt on the first drive of the second quarter, N. Marshall intercepted D. Fleming, sparking the Wildcat offense. With 2:35 left in the first half, K. Colter found R. Lawrence for a two-yard touchdown, cutting the Tiger lead to 14-7.



Northwestern forced an Auburn punt and went right to work. On second-and-10, Colter found Lawrence for a 66-yard touchdown, tying the game at 14 with 1:19 left in the opening half. It was way too much time for the Tiger offense, as Marshall found E. Robinson for a 19-yard strike with :09 left, giving the Tigers a 21-14 lead at the break.



The Wildcats started the second half with the ball, but had to settle for a 40-yard field goal from J. Budzien with 3:11 to play in the quarter. On the next play, T. Mason took a wildcat snap off the left side for a 75-yard touchdown, giving Auburn a 28-17 lead with 2:58 to play in the third.



Northwestern quickly got back in it on two plays. On the first play of the drive, Colter found C. Jones for a gain of 31 yards before V. Mark went 44 yards for a touchdown on the ground, cutting the Auburn lead to 28-24 with 2:32 left in the third quarter.



With 1:03 left in the third, N. Van Hoose intercepted Marshall. Northwestern didn't have the ball long, as Colter was intercepted by J. Holland on second down. Auburn gave Mason the ball seven-straight times before throwing a three-yard pass with 5:11 to play in the fourth. The Tigers settled for a 25-yard field goal from C. Parkey, as they took a 31-24 lead with 4:51 to play.



Northwestern couldn't capitalize, as they were forced to punt. With 2:22 to play, Marshall found Mason for a 66-yard touchdown pass on a screen, giving the Tigers a 38-24 lead. Northwestern moved the ball to the Tiger 35-yard line, but Colter was intercepted by J. Holland with 1:51 to play.
