A great game by both teams, Wake Forest overcame a 13-point deficit, gave up a tying TD with 4 seconds to go, then barely held on to force a Double OT, and finally got the victory in the second extra frame.
Tanner Price threw for 322 yards and 4 scores while not turning the ball over. Brandon Terry was his first favorite target, the opening drive saw Terry catch a 31 yd pass and then a 39 yard TD. NC State would rattle off 20 unanswered though, behind a very efficient run game. Price would connect with Michael Campanaro for a 58 yard TD before the half to make it 20-14 at the break.
NC State responded quickly in the third as Brissett would hit Underwood with a long 54 yard strike of their own to put Wolfpack back up 13. Josh Harris closed out the third quarter with a nifty 64 yard scamper up the middle and Wake was back within 6 headed into the fourth,
Price would hook up with Campanaro again early in the fourth, this time from 3 yards out and the Demon Deacons regained the lead at 28-27. Brissett would have a huge 45 yard run, but a defensive stand forced another FG for the Wolfpack, but still the lead at 30-28. Price would connect with tight end Anthony Rook on a 55 yard score, and Wake took a 34-30 lead. After a Wake Forest INT and subsequent FG, they led 37-30 with just 55 seconds to go. Brissett put together an incredible drive, 4 for 4 on the drive for 54 yards and had a 19 yard run in between. He capped it off with a 1 yard score with just 4 seconds left in the game to force OT.
Wake got the ball first in OT. Price's only miscue of the game, he missed a wide open Brandon Terry on 2nd and 2, that would have been a sure TD. Harris was stuffed on 3rd and 2 and Wake settled for a FG. Wake Forest got a defensive stuff of their own on NC State's possession. 3rd and 1 from the 6 and Creecy was stopped for minus 2 and Wolfpack settle for a tying FG.
Double OT, NC State ball first, 3rd and 14.. Merrill Noel intercepts Brissett, pretty much ending the game. Wake knowing a FG wins it, gets an 18 yard run from Harris putting them inside the 10. 2 runs to set up middle of field and Chad Hedlund kicks the game-winning FG from 20 out.
