Later interceptions hurt Northwestern
EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern had its chances late in the game, but an interception with just over two minutes to play sealed the fate of the Wildcats, as they dropped to 1-4 after a 31-24 loss to Iowa.
Northwestern struck first with 3:38 to play in the first quarter, as J. Budzien connected on a 37-yard field goal, putting the Wildcats up 3-0.
Iowa went to the air for its first points. Four of the first five plays were runs by Mark Weisman, which led to a 49-yard pass from C. Sokol to J. Cotton on play-action for a touchdown. The strike gave the Hawkeyes a 7-3 lead with 1:41 to play in the opening quarter.
The Wildcats regained the lead on the next possession. With 5:42 to play in the opening half, Kain Colter found D. Vitale for a 20-yard touchdown, giving Northwestern a 10-7 lead.
Two plays later, C. Bryant intercepted Sokol. The ball didn't stay in the hands of the Wildcats long, as James Morris intercepted Colter two plays later.
With 1:27 to play in the first half, Sokol rushed 23 yards for a touchdown, giving the Hawkeyes a 14-10 lead.
Iowa extended its lead on the first possession of the second half, as Sokol found CJ Fiedorowicz for a 42-yard touchdown pass. The score gave Iowa a 21-10 lead with 4:55 left in the third quarter.
The Wildcats got right back in the game. After a 22-yard pass from Colter to T. Jones, Colter took a triple option 59-yards to the house, cutting the Hawkeye lead to 21-17 with 4:16 left in the third quarter.
On the second play of the fourth quarter, Mike Meyer hit a 33-yard field goal, giving the Hawkeyes a 24-17 lead with 6:35 to play.
The two teams exchanged interceptions, with Iowa's coming at their own eight-yard line, just as the Wildcats were looking to tie the game. On the next play, Weisman went 92-yards to the house, giving Iowa a 31-17 lead with 2:33 to play.
While the Wildcats looked dead as can be, Colter found C. Jones for a 70-yard touchdown pass on third and 10, cutting the lead to 31-24 with 1:57 to play. Northwestern had all three timeouts remaining, so they elected to kickoff instead of going for the onside kick.
A quick three-and-out with three timeouts gave the Wildcats the ball back. With the ball at their own 45-yard line, the Wildcats needed just 55 yards for the game tying touchdown. The drive didn't last long, as Colter was intercepted on the first play.
-Great game man. Was a fun one. Good luck the rest of the way.
