In the renewed battle for the Shillelagh Trophy, the Fighting Irish asserted their will on the ground and controlled the game throughout. The thunder and lightning duo of HB Jeremiyah "Lightning" Love and Jadarian "Thunder" Price combined for 208 yards on 28 carries, including 4 touchdowns.
The opening drive was a summary of most of the Irish drives for the day. QB Riley Leonard worked the ball around the and the Irish controlled the tempo, capping the opening drive with a 7 yard run by HB Love. Purdue would answer with a FG in the 1st, ending the quarter 7-3 ND.
In the 2nd, the Irish continued their marching ways, producing 2 more touchdowns, 1 by HB Love and the other with a nifty catch and run from Jayden Thomas. The Notre Dame defense continued to produce as they have so far this season, holding the Boilermakers scoreless in the 2nd and giving ND a 21-3 halftime advantage.
The Irish went back to work in the 3rd, putting a HB Jadarian Price TD on the board with just :34 left in the quarter, but Devin Mockobee went beast mode, shedding a couple of tacklers and outrunning the defense on a huge 65 yard TD run to close the quarter. ND up 28-10.
The 4th quarter was all Notre Dame, as every break seemed to go their way. Jadarian Price added another 6 yard touchdown run in the 4th and ND added a FG after Purdue turnover. Final score ND 38 - Purdue 10.
Coach Reign post game had this to say, "A 28 point victory today was much closer on the field. Coach Dub and the Boilermakers made some excellent plays, but the ball just didn't bounce their way. A dropped interception, an big fumble late in the game and a few drops from their WRs, all ended up making it a lot worse than it really was. If there's a such thing as running out of bad luck, Coach Dub and the Boilermakers may have unloaded it all here, so watch out Big 10! Good game Coach, looking forward to future rivalry games!"
The Boilermaker's fall once again to the Fighting Irish in the Shillelagh Trophy game.
The Boilermakers got bullied on the ground, giving up 208 yards and 4 touchdowns to the Irish's rushing attack. The defense struggled particularly on 3rd down, allowing the Irish offense to convert on 10/12 tries.
The offense didn't inspire much confidence either, scoring 10 points and passing for only 129 yards. The lone offensive highlight of the game came off a 65 yard touchdown run from Devin Mockobee in the 3rd quarter. Mockobee continues to be a bright spot on the offense, going 5 for 105 and a touchdown.
This game for the Boilermakers was defined by missed opportunities. Receiver C.J. Smith in particular had a rough day, dropping a would be long touchdown reception, fumbling in the 4th quarter, and having another long ball fall just a step out of his reach in another scoring chance.
"We missed on some key plays, but that was not the deciding factor in this game," coach Dub explained. "We were out coached and didn't put our players in the position to be successful. It falls on me to do a better job of setting our team up for success."
The Boilermakers go on the road for the first time this season, taking on a surging Oregon State Beavers led by head coach BradySenior.
