The Hurricanes came into their game tonight know they had to get a win in order to possibly turn their season around. The game would not start off how they would have liked though. In their first possession the Canes would go 3 and out. The Miami defense would be ask to try and do something early. They would get that as they would cause a fumble and recover giving Miami the ball around midfield. Miami would then lean on Damien Martinez as he would get two nice runs to get them down into scoring position. Martinez would punch it in for a 2 yard TD run and an early 7-0 lead. The Hokies would then go on a very nice drive and would be down inside the 10 yard line starting the second quarter. The Hokies QB would try a QB draw, but would get hit hard and fumble at the 2 yard line. The Canes defense would scoop up the ball and get themselves out of trouble. Miami would then be struck with their kryptonite so far this season, interceptions. Cam Ward would have a wide open player going towards the sideline, but would throw late and the pass ended up being picked off. "That could have been a huge play if we hit it right away," said Coach Dealer, "but instead we throw a pick and put our defense back on there." The Miami D would be able to hold the Hokies to a 41 yard field goal and a 7-3 lead late in the 2nd quarter. Miami would quickly go 3 and out again, but once again the Miami D would come up huge. This time an interception would give the Canes the ball at the 30 yard line with 1 minute remaining. Martinez would get his second TD of the half to take a 14-3 lead into the 2nd half. "That turnover right before half really helped give our team the momentum we needed going into that 3rd quarter," said Dealer.
The second half would open up great for the Canes. The defense would again get a turnover. This time Jaden Harris would take the interception and go back 18 yards for the TD and a 21-3 lead. The Miami D would not be done as on the next drive Zaquan Patterson would get an interception and give it right back to the offense. Martinez would bust a 32 yard run that would get the ball down inside the 5. Cam Ward would punch it in for a 28-3 lead. Miami would later hit on another big Martinez run, this time from 75 yards out that would make the final score 35-10. "Damien played a great game for us today," said Dealer, "he ran hard and hit some big runs when we really needed a play."
The Canes will play Oklahoma St and @ Louisville in their next block of games, hoping to improve on their 1-4 start.
This rivalry game was not much of a contest as the Hokies turned the ball over 6 times in the game. Two early fumbles were costly and then it became a turnover fest when the Hurricanes intercepted 4 passes thrown by Tech QB's. The ground game was solid as Tuten rushed for 90 yards in the loss. The Hokies will travel to Stanford next week looking to bounce back and get their first win of the season against the new member of the ACC.
