Boise, Idaho – In a game that had everything, the Boise State Broncos ultimately fell short to the Washington State Cougars, losing by a score of 34-28. The contest was a back-and-forth affair that featured big plays on both sides of the ball, but the 4th quarter comeback fell short as Malachi Nelson threw a boneheaded INT to end the comeback quickly.
The Broncos' offense showed flashes of brilliance, with quarterback Malachi Nelson completing 14 of 25 passes for 296 yards and a touchdown. Running back Ashton Jeanty continued his impressive season, rushing for 113 yards on 26 carries. However, the Broncos struggled to convert on third down, going just 4-for-10. Turnovers, were the name of the game as the Broncos lost two fumbles and threw a game-clinching pick to make life even easier for the Cougars.
The Broncos' defense played well for much of the game, forcing a fumble and intercepting a pass. However, they were unable to contain the Cougars' offense, which racked up 443 total yards. Washington State quarterback Cameron Ward completed 25 of 38 passes for 313 yards and three touchdowns.
One of the major storylines of the game was the technical difficulties that plagued the Broncos' coaching staff. Due to 'headset' latency issues, there were several instances where the coaches were unable to communicate effectively with Nelson on the sidelines. This undoubtedly had an impact on the Broncos' offensive rhythm and execution and led to at least one untimely turnover in the game.
Despite the loss, conference play gets underway next week and Coach Roc must address the communication issues if they want to be a contender in the conference.
