A normally dominate offense was embarrassed by a stout Irish defense in route to a 24-10 loss for the Cards. their first of the season. Although the team has preformed well against ranked teams in pool play, their game against #2 Notre Dame was anything but well.
Notre Dame's hosting of the upstart Cardinals didn't go as smoothly as planned early on. Once again with the all of the NDL eyes on the matchup for the game of the week, the offense started slowly. This time a victim of circumstance, as top rusher Jeramiyah Love was hampered with injuries.
After a scoreless 1st quarter, the Irish finally put 3 on the board, with 2:45 to go in the half. The late FG looked like it was going to mirror the 3-0 result of the kickoff classic vs Alabama, but Coach Meep and the Cards had other plans. A nearly perfect 2 minute drill drive found the Cards up 7-3 on a Donald Chaney 6yd run. Unfortunately for the Cards, nearly perfect meant there was still 7 a few seconds on the clock and that's all it took for Notre Dame QB Riley Leonard to find SR WR Kris Mitchell for an 89 yard TD pass, to close the half 10-7 Notre Dame.
In the second half, with their "Lightning" HB J. Love out, Notre Dame turned to "Thunder," Jadarian Price, bring the game home. Price came up with a TD in the 3rd and in the 4th, while the ND defense held the Cardinals to just 3 points in the 2nd half, sealing a Notre Dame victory, 24-10.
After the game Coach Reign had this to say: "We faced some serious adversity losing Love and a few nicks and dings on the defense throughout this one. I'm so proud of how the backups stepped up. The next man up mentality is crucial over the course of the long season. Coach Meep had the Cards ready for the hostile environment and we were fortunate enough to make a few big momentum shifting plays to give us that edge through the 2nd half. With Coach Meep at the helm, Louisville is going to be a serious contender in the ACC."
