After a rough 1-2 start to the season that saw Jacksonville State QB Zion Turner throw nine interceptions in the two losses, Jax State and Turner came into a rivalry game with Kennesaw State with a renewed focus.
Helping renew the focus was a double bye week after the 1-2 start that allowed the team to get more practice reps in. The practice helped as Turner and the JSU offense looked like a different team hitting the Owls with a balanced attacked.
The balanced attacked gave JSU an early lead that they never relinquished on their way to a 37-16 win.
Turner completed 80% of his passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns. More importantly though, Turner threw zero interceptions on the day.
Aiding in Turner's efforts to reduce turnovers was a consistent ground game.
Running backs Anwar Lewis and Andrew Paul combined for 178 yards rushing on 27 carries. Each of them reached the end zone as well.
Defensively, the Jacksonville State Gamecocks defense notched three interceptions on the day to close out a win.
Jacksonville State improves to 2-2 and 1-0 in Conference USA play. The Gamecocks now look to Block 4 and encounters with New Mexico State and UCONN.
The owls finally looked good on offense but still struggled on defense. Credit to BlockM as he had his boys ready to play and kept us off balance. Offense was good between the 20’s but has to get better in the red zone. Next up for the owls is MTSU and their high powered offense. GG Block and great to catch up!
