HUNTINGTON, WV - Appalachian State's trip to Huntington proved to be a difficult one, as the Mountaineers fell to Marshall 38-9 in a game marked by turnovers and missed opportunities. Aguilar had trouble finding consistent protection, and Marshall’s defense capitalized on his miscues.
In the second quarter, Marshall extended their lead with a 44-yard field goal by Rece Verhoff, putting them up 10-0 at the 3:45 mark. Disaster struck for the Mountaineers moments later when Marshall’s JJ Roberts intercepted Aguilar and returned it 82 yards for a touchdown, giving the Herd a commanding 17-0 lead with just 1:31 left in the half. Despite these individual efforts, the overall defensive unit had difficulty slowing down Pennington, who finished with 246 passing yards and two touchdowns.
In the fourth quarter, Pennington threw his final touchdown of the game, connecting with Tychaun Chapman for a 29-yard score to make it 38-7 with 6:12 remaining. The Mountaineers did manage to earn two points late in the game via a safety, but by then the outcome was already decided.
