This game looked like it was going to start out a s a route for Tulane. Bryce Bohanon returned the opening kickoff 103yds for a TD. Makahi Hughes and Yulkeith Brown also added touchdowns for the Green Wave. UAB would fire back Amare Thomas and his big hit of a play from 80yds out. Tulane wouldnt be denied as Dontae Fleming added a 87yd TD pass to close out 1st quarter scoring.
In the 2nd quarter UAB would take over and punch Tulane on the chin and go for the kill. Jones, Shanks and Beebe Jr would add TDs for UAB. Hughes broke off a fancy 54yd TD for Tulane's only scoring play in the quarter. Score at the half Tulane 35 - UAB 28
UAB wasn't done throwing punches and they made Tulane pay in the 3rd. Witherspoon would return 2 KOs for TDs and Shanks would add his 2nd TD as well. Mario Williams would add 2 TDs one on a 11yd pass from Thompson and an 81yd end around play play broke off the right side.
Going in to the 4th Tulane and UAB would be tied at 49. The defense stood tall in the 4th. Lu Tillery picked a Jacob Zeno pass off and took it back 47yds for a pick 6. UAB wasted no time and answered the call with a 37yd TD pass from Zeno to Shanks to tie it up at 56. Tulane wouldnt be denied and took a 4:30 drive capped off by a 4yd Mario Willims pass from Ty Thompson to move ahead 63-56. UAB took over and was driving down the field until Jesus Machado Picked off a pass for his 2nd INT and game sealing play to hold off UAB.
This was a wild game, but the first quarter looked like a beat down, but someone forgot to tell the Blazers that after being down 28-7 they deccided that special teams and the passing game would fuel a come back. Considering the fact that UABs passing game has been brutal it was very surprising to see Zeno pass for over 400 yds and 4 Tds to get the Blazers back in it and at one point in the lead 49-42. This come back was also spawned by 2 KO return for TDs by Lee Witherspoon and Punt return TD by Cam Shanks. Credit to Tulane and Doc for keeping their composure and that powerful offense that showed up in Birmingham had some mor in the tank to pull a 63-56 victory in crazy fun game that unfortunately somebody had to lose, which was me...lol
