Jax State Struggles to Defend Once Again

Article By: Block M

The Ass-Kicking Chickens don't do much kicking on defense.

Offensively, the Gamecocks put together another respectable showing. After an early interception from QB Zion Turner the Gamecocks settled in and used a balanced attack to score points and keep pace.

Keeping pace was the name of the game however as JSU struggled on defense yet again.

Jacksonville State trailed 10-0 early on and tied the game but had to continuously play from behind after surrendering big play after big play. New Mexico State amassed 303 yard passing and 191 yard rushing to out do Jacksonville State's 257 yards passing and 208 yards rushing.

Near the end, JSU trailed 24-17 with about four minutes left and put together a 14-play drive that ate up most of the clock and resulted in a touchdown to send the game to overtime at 24-24.

The defensive struggles continued in overtime however, even with a shorter field to defend. In the second overtime the Gamecocks were forced to score and get a two-point conversion trailing 39-31. They would get to the goal line and be stopped on four consecutive plays with the final play being a pass into the end zone that looked to be caught but fluttered to the ground to send JSU to 2-4 (1-1) on the year.

NMSU ANOTHER OT GAME

Article By: oldschoola

This was the Aggies' third OT game during the first seven weeks of the season (new NDL record – unofficially). There wasn’t a lot of D in this one as the teams each racked up nearly 500 yards of offense (NSUM 494 and Jax State 465). Jax State put together a drive down seven with time running out in regulation. Jax RB Zion Turner scored on a two yard rushing TD with 17 ticks on the clock. Coach Oldschoola “If I told you I wasn’t thinking here we go yet again I’d be lying. - damn proud of my kids.”

Each team scored on their opening possession and the Aggies took home the win on a 14-yard Donovan Faupel TD reception. The Aggie's three OT games have been crazy this season. Each team only had one turnover which allowed for some offense to be played. NMSU had 191 rushing and 303 passing yards on the game.
