Rinse and repeat. The story of the year has been turnovers, and it continued today. The Carolina defense gave up a one play touchdown to start the game, but after that, they played well throughout the first half, stopping the Jackets on multiple trips inside the red zone. How did they get there? Turnovers. A bad read here and a couple of horrible passes there, and short fields turned into touchdowns for Tech. The UNC coach reiterated after the game, "You can't turn the ball over and win, period."
After a blowout loss against #2 Notre Dame at home, the Yellow Jackets pulled off the upset at North Carolina. On the first play of their first possession, Haynes King dropped a 59-yard touchdown pass to Chase Lane for his only touchdown of the game. The Yellow Jackets then benefitted off a 22-yard pick-6 from Rodney Shelley, and pulled even further ahead with two Jamal Haynes touchdowns set up by two more interceptions in the first half. North Carolina QB Conner Harrell threw 4 interceptions in total.
After securing a 28-7 lead going into halftime, the Yellow Jackets relied on the run game to chew down the clock. A possession that lasted nearly the entire 3rd quarter ended in a 1-yard TD run for Haynes, stifling any Tar Heel hopes of a comeback. North Carolina would go on to score once more, ending the game at 35-14.
Despite a decisive victory, the Georgia Tech coach was critical of the passing game. "We can't assume four interceptions and good field position every game. The game script allowed us to rely on the run, but that won't always be the case moving forward."
The Yellow Jackets travel to Virginia Tech in week 9.
