In a high-scoring affair on Saturday, Wake Forest’s defense was unable to contain Clemson’s offensive juggernaut, falling 44-34. Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik delivered an almost flawless performance, completing 17 of 18 passes for 305 yards and four touchdowns, with zero turnovers. Klubnik’s precision dismantled Wake Forest's defense, which struggled to mount any significant resistance throughout the game. The Demon Deacons' defensive issues were glaring, as they allowed Klubnik to exploit mismatches and dominate the field.
Wake Forest quarterback Hank Bachmeier had a tumultuous first half, throwing two or three interceptions before the break, which stymied the team’s offensive efforts and contributed to the mounting deficit. His performance was marred by a series of mistakes, leading to a frustrating start for the Demon Deacons. However, Bachmeier rebounded strongly in the second half, showing resilience and composure. He finished the game with impressive numbers, going 18 for 24 for 328 yards and five touchdowns, but his late surge wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit.
Despite Bachmeier’s second-half heroics, Wake Forest could not recover from their defensive lapses and the costly turnovers that plagued them early on. The loss highlighted significant areas for improvement, particularly on defense and in protecting the football. As the season progresses, Wake Forest will need to address these issues urgently to compete effectively in their remaining games and avoid further setbacks.
After a difficult defeat at Florida State, Clemson travelled to Wake Forest. Both teams prefer to establish a strong ground game but today's battle was an air raid affair with big plays throughout the game.
Wake Forest managed to bottle up Phil Mafah during the game so it was Klubnik who put Clemson on his shoulders. He was superb today with only one incompletion and four touchdown passes. The air raid party really started after Wake had tied the game at 7. On the first play of the drive following the score, Klubnik found Antonio Williams wide open for an 80 yard catch and run to take a 14-7 lead. After that the Clemson defense started to play better. Clemson forces a high rate of turnovers and today was the same result which led to a couple of quick scores for Clemson. Wake scored towards the end of the half and had to be feeling good but Clemson had just under a minute to move the ball down the field and score a dagger of a touchdown as the half ended with a 34-20 halftime lead.
Wake Forest's pass game found their groove in the second half and made the game a real challenge but the Tigers resolve was strong.
Great Game Matt and GL rest of the way.
