Illinois used a big play offense and a goal line stand in the final seconds to overcome four turnovers and beat 19th ranked Michigan 28-24 in Champaign.
After an early defensive stop, Illinois was starting to drive the ball when a Cole Rusk Fumble was returned by Michigan 57 yards and the games first TD. Illinois struck next with a 86 yard TD pass from Luke Altmeyer to Ashton Hollins to tie the game. Michigan added a FG and a 61 yard TD pass of their own to take a 17-7 halftime lead.
Illinois scored a TD in the 3rd and the Wolverines answered with their own TD in the 4th quarter, Michigan had a 24-14 lead with 4 minutes to go in the game. Illinois came to life with a three play scoring drive in 15 seconds as Altmeyer found Malik Elzy for a 51 yard TD pass.
On the next possession, Dylan Rosiek intercepted a floater from Michigan QB Alex Orji to set up the Illini offense. Illinois drove down to the 1 yard line where Altmeyer found Pat Bryant for a 1 yard TD pass to take the lead.
Michigan would not give up, driving the ball inside the Illini 5 yard line as time ticked away. Three times the Illini defense turned the Michigan offense away from the 3 yard line and was able to seal the victory.
The University of Michigan travelled to Champaign and were handed an L in the last two minutes of the game. Coach Uf83198 coached a hell of a game. Michigan led for most of the game and couldn't seal the deal. Late in the fourth Quarter the Illinois Defense forced a turnover on an ugly mistaken lob in the middle of the field on 3rd and 5 that forces an interception. Illinois drove right down the field and scored a touchdown on an out route in the end zone to give Illinois a 28-24 lead.
The Wolverines had one last shot of scoring with plenty of time on the clock at their own 20 and were able to successfully drive down the field to the Illini 3 yard line. The Illini defense came up strong and stopped Michigan's offense from scoring to seal the deal.
When asked about the loss, Coach Phreakk said, "We have to avoid the mental mistakes, whether it's finding the right hole to run through, finding the open guy, or pump faking on a wide open screen. We have to learn from our losses, as well as, the close games".
Michigan's Athletic Director has advised Phreakk that he is officially on the hot seat after the loss to Illinois.
Great Game Coach Uf!
