This was an offensive explosion but in two very different styles. Kansas State hammering the run sprinkling in play action and RPOs, and Houston throwing the ball all over the field in an Air Raid master class. Early on it seemed the first team to blink would lose this one, K-State was stopped on a short 3rd down and opted for a FG from the 27 yard line going wide left. The Cougars balked right back having to punt to the Wildcats and the stale mate was back to offense. The Wildcats punched in one of their 5 rushing touchdowns with under 20 seconds left in the first half to take a 21-14 lead to the break.
Houston stormed out of the gates with the ball scoring 28 points in the second half. A huge stop that forced the first KSU punt of the game late in the fourth seemed to have tipped the scaled in the Cougs favor. However the Cougars scored so quickly it left the Wildcats with around a minute to see if they could score and force OT or a 2 point try for the W. Johnson drove the ball down the field connecting with Cephas under the safety with 6 seconds left in the game and coach bearass opted for the PAT after the early stop in short yardage and the WVU goal line stand on his mind.
Houston won the toss in OT and Kansas State was able to score and kick to go up 7. Everyone knew Houston was bound to score, which they did in 3 plays, and it was decision time for Yragha1. As the offense marched out for the try Coach bearass was seen shouting expletives at his DC and the rushed the defense onto the field for the try. Jacob Parrish was able to stay with his man on the quick smash route and knock the pass away to secure a 49-48 victory for KSU.
HOUSTON, TX - at least for a week, the offense wasn't offensive. Coach Rags hinted this past week to us after practice that redshirt freshman Caleb McMickle was getting some first string reps but ultimately held off benching senior QB Donovan Smith and could that decision have lit a fire? The stat line says, QUITE POSSIBLY after his 25-29 for over 450yds in what is without a doubt his most impressive performance to date.
Of course, on the other hand, it was another week with another loss for the Houston Cougars falling to 2-6 after such a promising start to the season and the losing streak has now reached six after the loss in OT to Kansas St 49-48.
"Is what it is, we made some tweaks, evidently not enough. I'm more worried about our defense at this point. We can't stop anyone. All we needed was for someone to step up for us with a minute and some change left in regulation and we couldn't even do that. We let them drive, what 75, 80 yards? Unacceptable. I've said it before, I'll say it again til we're (or I'm literally) blue in the face, our offense is dangerous when Donovan's not throwing to other folks but our defense is just D-fenseless and to be frank, it's annoying the crap out of me and you can quote me on that. Go Coogs!"
