Texas had looked much improved after wins at Vanderbilt, v Oklahoma (Cup Neutral) and a close loss against the well coached UMASS Minuteman, and carried that momentum into the game against the #9 ranked Florida Gators.
Early on, Texas looked like the "Bad Texas" throwing an interception in the redzone as Quinn Ewers misread the coverage in the deep middle, intercepted by Gator Devin Moore.
Texas put the clamps down on D, Creating sacks on both first and second down which forced a punt. The Longhorns score the next drive on two big passing plays, a 30 yard connection to Isaiah Bond followed by a 50 yard connection from Quinn Ewers to Silas Bolden for a touchdown and to open the scoring, 7-0.
The Second quarter was dominated by big plays from the Longhorns Defense specifically - 2 interception for touchdowns by DB's Jaylon Guilbeau and Derek Williams Jr.. The score at half was 24-0.
Early on in the Third, The Gators and Longhorns traded touchdowns, Quinn Ewers connecting early in the third for a 64 yard pass to Matthew Golden to make it 31-0.
The Gators responded with a TD of their own Mertz- Badger connection to make it 31-7.
Late in the third, Texas put it away with a 82 yard drive, most of the damage being done on the ground. The drive was capped off by a Quinn Ewers Amari Nilback 14 yard TD connection to put the game out of reach, 38-7.
Coach Z was proud of the teams effort today, especially given the poor finish against the minuteman.
"We took a lead and held it today, im proud of that. We got too conservative against a very tough minuteman team and paid for hit. Against the Gators, we played about as well as we could of in the 3rd quarter to secure the win. Despite my days here numbered, we will continue to give an A+ Effort the rest of the way!"
It was a miserable day to be a Gators fan in Arlington Texas this afternoon. The Florida Gators got absolutely demolished by the Texas Longhorns in a game that seemed like it was once again over before it began. Florida QB Graham Mertz threw two pick sixes in the late second quarter and he never recovered mentally. Hopefully the Florida Gators can get back on track before they get knocked out of the playoffs.
