Article By: bergerkingcle

(Kent, OH) In a commanding display of football excellence, the Kent State Golden Flashes triumphed over the Akron Zips with a decisive 45-14 victory in the Battle of the Wagon Wheel on Thursday night. Wide receiver Luke Florea stole the show, catching 7 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns, while the win secured Kent State’s bowl eligibility and highlighted the team’s dominance. Coach Bergerking, in his first year back at his alma mater, was visibly moved, shedding tears of joy as he celebrated the team's achievement. "We came out here and showed that when we play as one, we're a force to be reckoned with,” he said, his voice trembling with emotion. “As Kobe Bryant once said, ‘The moment you think you’re not good enough is the moment you need to be doing it.’ This victory is just the beginning!” With a 6-3 record and a bowl game secured, the Golden Flashes now turn their attention to finishing the season strong with upcoming games against Ohio in Week 11 and Miami in Week 12.

Zips Lose to Rival Kent St

In a disappointing turn of events, the Akron Zips were handed a decisive 45-14 loss by the Kent State Golden Flashes in their latest football matchup. The game, held at Kent State’s Dix Stadium, showcased a dominant performance from the home team and left Akron searching for answers. With the rivalry loss the Wagon Wheel will stay in Kent with the Golden Flashes.

From the outset, Kent State established control, demonstrating a high-octane offense and a relentless defensive scheme. The Golden Flashes wasted no time in setting the tone, with their offense executing a series of successful drives that put Akron on its heels.

Despite a spirited effort from Akron's offense, including a couple of notable plays, the team struggled to maintain momentum. The Zips’ offensive line faced consistent pressure, leading to a series of sacks and hurried throws that stalled many of their drives. Akron’s quarterback, under duress for much of the game, was unable to find a rhythm, resulting in several missed opportunities.

The Zips’ defense, which had shown promise in previous games, was overwhelmed by Kent State’s aggressive and fast-paced attack. The Golden Flashes managed to exploit gaps and mismatches, resulting in several long scoring plays that further widened the gap.

It was a disappointing showing in such a big rivalry game. Akron will regroup and try again next season.
