It started off well in the first quarter for BYU as both teams failed to score then the wheels started to fall off quickly for the Cougars. ASU outscored BYU in the 2nd stanza 17-7 and got the ball at half and proceeded the dominate performance by outscoring BYU 21-7 in the second half. ASU controlled the clock by using 18:47 of it and giving BYU only 35 offensive plays - ASU converted eight of nine third down (the lone miss was the gimme run up the middle to kill clock in the 4th so basically 8/8). BYU threw two picks that crushed any chance to make it respectable.
Arizona State delivered a commanding performance in their 38-14 win over BYU, showcasing their offensive firepower and defensive efficiency.
The Sun Devils dominated the game with 508 total yards of offense, far surpassing BYU’s 247 yards. Arizona State’s balanced attack was led by a robust passing game that amassed 258 yards and a solid rushing effort totaling 166 yards. In contrast, BYU struggled to find their rhythm, with only 109 rushing yards and 138 passing yards.
Arizona State’s offense was particularly effective on third downs, converting 8-of-9 attempts, which significantly contributed to their ability to sustain drives and control the game. BYU, on the other hand, found little success on third downs, going just 1-of-3.
The Sun Devils’ red-zone efficiency was another key factor, as they capitalized on their two red-zone trips with touchdowns. BYU, in contrast, was unable to make it into the red zone, further highlighting Arizona State’s defensive prowess and their ability to limit scoring opportunities for their opponents.
Defensively, Arizona State was stellar, notching two interceptions and benefiting from a clean sheet in penalties. BYU, despite their best efforts, could not overcome their two turnovers and struggled to match Arizona State’s intensity.
Special teams play was also a bright spot for Arizona State, as they gained 68 yards on kick returns and maintained a time of possession of 18:47 compared to BYU’s 9:13. This allowed the Sun Devils to keep their offense on the field and wear down BYU’s defense.
Overall, Arizona State’s comprehensive victory reflected their superior play on both sides of the ball. As they move forward, the Sun Devils will look to build on this strong performance, while BYU will need to regroup and address their areas of concern.
