In a decisive clash, Wake Forest secured a 21-7 victory over Miami, with linebacker Dylan Hazen delivering a standout performance that stole the spotlight. Hazen was instrumental in the Demon Deacons' triumph, as he notched two crucial interceptions and a fumble recovery, proving to be a formidable force on defense. His playmaking ability stifled Miami's offensive efforts and set the stage for Wake Forest's win.
On the offensive side, quarterback Hank Bachmeier exhibited exceptional poise and precision, consistently connecting with open receivers on pivotal third downs. His steady performance ensured the Demon Deacons maintained momentum and capitalized on their scoring opportunities. The synergy between Bachmeier’s sharp passes and Hazen’s defensive heroics underscored Wake Forest's well-rounded approach to the game.
Great game dealer! Hope to play again soon!
Miami tries to find some running room in their game verse Wake Forest
Miami came into this game with Wake Forest knowing they had lost their shot at an ACC Championship game appearance and it seemed to show in all aspects of their play. Wake Forest would get the ball first and would put together an almost 5 minute drive that would be capped with a 9 yard TD pass and a 7-0 lead. Miami would not be able to get anything going on their opening possession and would be forced into a 3 and out. That would be the last time they saw the ball in the first quarter. Wake Forest would put another nice drive together but this time would be forced into a 50 yard field goal, they would miss it giving the Canes great field position. The Canes would finally get their offense going and would cap their 10 play drive with a Damien Martinez 4 yard TD run. The score at halftime would be 7-7. "We played okay in that first half," said Coach Dealer, "I felt good about being tied, because we did not play our best ball on either side of the ball.
To open up the second half, the Canes would get the ball and things were looking really good. Miami would mix in runs and passes and would have themselves down inside the 5 yard line looking to go up. Cam Ward would be tackled on a sweep play and fumble the ball giving the ball to Wake Forest. "I've got to hold on to that ball. There's no way I should be fumbling the ball down there. I really hurt our team with that play," said Ward. There was hope that the defense would be able to force a quick 3 and out and get the ball back to their offense. But, Wake would hit on 3rd down conversions as they did all day going 6 for 8 on 3rd down. Wake would then go on a big drive and score early in the 4th quarter to go up 14-7. "I think our team just shut down after the fumble and giving up a 94 yard drive," said Dealer. Miami would thrown an interception on the next drive and Wake would make them pay with another touchdown and a 21-7 lead. That would also be the final score of the game.
"That was not how we wanted to end our regular season," said Dealer, "I've got to do a better job about getting the kids ready to play each and every game. Hopefully I'll be back for another season but totally understand if they feel they need to go in a new direction."
