First Half
Liberty’s Offensive Surge
Liberty came out strong, with their quarterback, Kaidon Salter, leading the charge. Salter demonstrated poise and precision, throwing for an early touchdown. Salter connected on a 37-yd pass to Tyson Mobley. Then Liberty defense showed up to play by forcing a fumble and Brylan Green Picks it up on scores on a 25-yd scoop and score to put the Flames up 14-0.
Sam Houston Struggled in the first half to get anything going, and the Flames were ready to make a statement heading into the Conference Championship next week. Early in the 2nd quarter Liberty marches down the field and the drive finishes off with an 11-yd TD run by Quinton Cooley. The Bearkats looked to battle back, and on their next drive they wore the Liberty defense out. John Gentry closes out the 1st half on a 1-yd TD run to make it 21-7 going into the half.
Second Half
Defensive Adjustments
The second half saw both teams making crucial adjustments. Liberty’s defense, after allowing a few big plays, tightened up significantly. Liberty’s defensive line put consistent pressure on Schmid, disrupting his rhythm and forcing him into hurried throws and created 4 interceptions in the game. Sam Houston slowed down the high-powered Liberty offense by holding them to 10 points in the second half.
It wasn't enough as Liberty walks away with a 31-15 win on the road and looking ahead to play Utep in the Conference championship game.
Even though it was a 16 point loss, and 46 total points were scored, it felt closer and fairly defensive.
The Bearkats were more efficient on 3rd down conversions (4 for SHSU vs 1 for Liberty) and their passing game was leading the way (nearly double the passing yards to Liberty. The run game was half of what Liberty had though, which speaks to the balance that Liberty's offense has.
a bright spot for the Bearkats was they didn't make the typical mistakes and have lots of turnovers.
They are hoping to finish with some positives for the rest of the season, and knew going into this game Liberty was one of the toughest (if not toughest) teams in CUSA.
