Illinois fought hard but came up short on the road vs the 12th ranked Northwestern Wildcats. Illinois took the lead with 2:24 left in the game, but Northwestern was able drive down and kick a game winning field goal with :18 left in the game.
Illinois got off to a fast start. After NW missed a FG, the Illini struck quickly on a 86 yard TD from Altmyer to Bryant. After an INT by the Wildcats, Illinois kicked 21 yd FG to take a 10 -0 early lead.
Northwestern scored the next 20 points as Illinois' defense struggled to stop the run game again. Illinois made a comeback to take the lead late on a 75yd Jet Sweep by Mario Sanders to take a 1 point lead. But it would only be temporary as NW pulled out the W.
In what was a nailbiter all game, the Wildcats hold on for a 26-24 win at home vs Illinois. The win gives Northwestern a 9-3 record and they now await their bowl game opponent. Jack Lausch was SHARP, completing 20 and 27 passes for 256 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT. He was bested by his counterpart on the other side, Luke Altmyer who completed 14 of 18 for 343 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs. It was the ground game that ended up being the difference: Illinois only amassed 22 rushing yards while the Wildcats went for 169 with their two-headed monsters, Cam Porter and Joseph Himon II.
The Wildcats will need to be better on defense if we want to win our bowl game. We can't count on this kind of offensive efficient every week. GG to Illinois.
