Wolfpack woahs in vegas

Article By: Klawdog101

Wolfpack protected the ball very well with no turnovers. The Wolfpack struggled on 3rd down, they went 1-6 third down conversions. UNLV went 11/14 on third down conversions. That is the difference in the game. Wolfpack defense was elite with having two interceptions and only allowing 17 points on the road. Wolfpack offense lets the team down with not shining when the plays meant the most. Brandon lewis has to have more awareness and not take big sack late in games. Hats off to UNLV for the win.

UNLV Takes Biggest Trophy in College

Article By: Black Rain

The Battle of Nevada goes to the UNLV Runnin Rebels, and the Fremont Cannon will be painted red. UNLVs rivalry game with UNR has been around since 1969, but the cannon was not introduced until 1970, and here is a background on the Fremont Cannon.

The Cannon

In 1970, the Nevada Mines Division of the Kennecott Copper Corp. donated the replica of the weaponry used in American explorer John C. Fremont's 1843 expedition through Oregon, Nevada and California. The heaviest and most expensive trophy in college football, the Fremont Cannon weighs about 545 pounds and cost $10,000 to build.

The howitzer cannon, which was fired off after every score during the game, became permanently silenced in 2000, when Rebel players and fans accidentally dropped the trophy while hoisting it in celebration of their victory.

Fighting Words

The rivalry wasn’t always kept on the football field. When the cannon was being repaired after the damages from the 2000 victory celebration, UNLV officials found some fighting words inside the cannon. The inscription of “University of Notta Lotta Victories” made fun of UNLV’s not-so-stellar record of wins. In true Rebel spirit, UNLV replied back with an inscription of “University of Northern Rejects.”

The playful rivalry continues to this day, as the two schools fight for the right to paint the Fremont Cannon.

The Rebels made the move back to Senior QB Cameron Friel. He was decisive and got the ball out early and fast, but did make two interception; however, he zinged the ball to his receivers who were surprisingly separating from the Wolfpack defensive backs. The Rebels showed resiliency going 11-14 on third downs, which is the highlight of the season as they have the worst offense in the Mountain West Conference, but hats off to Head Coach Klawdog101, he had his Wolfpack ready and battling. Runningback Jai Den Thomas ran the ball successfully on 24 attempts for 105 yards. The Rebels offensive line opened up lanes for Thomas and he kept the first down chains moving.

Head Coach Klawdog101 kept the Rebels passing game at bay with the two key interceptions, as QB Friels threw the ball to the wrong receivers on those two routes, as the second Tight End Christian Moore and Runningback Jai den Thomas were open on those two throws, and going back to the tape showed they were both wide open. Head Coach Black Rain explained for Friels to go through his reads and stop forcing the ball, resulting in the two interceptions, which could of cost UNLV the Fremont Cannon. The team showed up for Las Vegas, and proved a bad season could provide some hope of improvement for future seasons if Head Coach Black Rain is not fired, and gets to keep his job for the foreseeable future. Great game Klawdog101, I got lucky as the UNLV defense picked up timely stops enroute to the 17-14 victory for the Battle of Nevada! UNLV wins the Battle of Nevada!
