TUSCALOOSA, AL – In a shocking start to the season, the Alabama Crimson Tide were handed a rare and humbling defeat by the UMass Minutemen, falling 31-10 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. This was a game where nothing seemed to go right for the Tide, as turnovers and offensive struggles overshadowed their efforts on the field.
Quarterback Jalen Milroe, who was expected to lead Alabama's high-powered offense, had a game to forget. Milroe threw four interceptions, each more damaging than the last, as UMass capitalized on nearly every mistake. His lone bright spot came in the fourth quarter, where he connected with wide receiver Kendrick Law for an 80-yard touchdown pass. Law, known for his speed, found a seam in the defense, giving the Tide a brief glimmer of hope. Unfortunately, that was as close as Alabama would get to mounting a comeback.
The Minutemen's defense was relentless, holding Alabama to just 281 total yards, a far cry from the explosive numbers Crimson Tide fans have grown accustomed to. UMass's defensive line dominated the trenches, consistently pressuring Milroe and shutting down the running game, which managed only 97 yards on the ground.
On the other side of the ball, UMass played with poise and confidence, seizing control early and never letting up. Their balanced attack kept Alabama’s defense on its heels, with the Minutemen methodically moving the ball down the field and capitalizing on their opportunities.
Head Coach Kalen Deboer, visibly frustrated, emphasized the need for improvement in his post-game remarks. "We did not play Alabama football today" Saban said. "Too many mistakes, too many turnovers, and we got outplayed in every phase of the game. We have got a lot of work to do."
For Alabama, this loss is a wake-up call. As a team that has long prided itself on discipline and execution, the Crimson Tide will need to regroup quickly if they hope to remain in the national championship conversation.
The road ahead doesn't get any easier, but if there’s one thing this program has shown over the years, it’s resilience. Alabama will look to bounce back next week, but this loss will undoubtedly linger as a reminder that no opponent can be taken lightly.
