Miami came into Mizzou hoping to rebound from their loss at Florida. The game did not start off right though as Mizzou would hit on a 73 yard TD pass on their opening drive. The Canes would come back on their next drive though as Cameron Ward would hit TE Elijah Arroyo on a 14 yard TD pass to tie the game at 7-7. The defense would step up on the next Mizzou possession as Isaiah Taylor would get his first interception of the day. Miami's drive would stall though and they would have to settle for a 31 yard field goal to go up 10-7. Both defenses would stop the offenses on the next drives. The big play would come for the Canes though as they would strip the WR and take the ball all the way back inside the 10 yard line. Damien Martinez would punch it in to put the Canes up 17-7. "That was a big play by our Defense to get that turnover and really give us some momentum," said Coach Dealer, "Our offense then getting the TD was really big for our confidence." That would be short lived though as Miami would not be able to stop the Mizzou offense and they would drive down the field to make it 17-14. The Canes would really falter on their next offensive possession. Ward would try and force a pass into coverage and the Mizzou Defense would make them pay returning the interception for a TD and a 21-17 lead at the half. "I can't make that throw," said Ward, "Our team had played so well in the first half to be down, was really deflating."
The second half would be a battle. Miami would jump out to a 24-21 lead after Martinez would break a 55 yard TD run. Miami looked to really take advantage as Taylor would get his second interception of the game. Unfortunately the Canes would not be able to do much and would punt it right back to Mizzou. The big drive came late in the 4th. After causing a QB fumble, the Canes were driving deep in Tiger territory. Ward would throw another pick that he definitely wishes he could have back. "That pick at the end is going to haunt me for awhile," said Ward, "I got to make better reads when we are in that position."
Coach Dealer is optimistic about the rest of the season, "We started off the season with two really tough road games. I'm hoping our boys will learn from these games and we can come back in Week 4 against Colorado St."
The Tiger defense comes up with the game sealing interception
Columbia, Missouri - The early season match-up between the Hurricanes of Miami and the Tigers of Missouri lived up to the hype and then some. The Tigers struck early on a long catch and run from quarterback Brady Cook to wide receiver Mookie Cooper, but the lead would be short lived as the Hurricanes offense led by running back Damien Martinez could not be stopped. Missouri held a slim lead late in the fourth quarter and it looked as though the Hurricanes were going to take the lead, however Tiger linebacker Caleb Flagg would come up with a huge interception and the offense was able to run the clock out to hang on for the victory. “We had ourselves an absolute barn burner,” said coach McDonagh after the game. “ I tip my cap to that Miami team, they gave us all we could handle and then some, but thankfully we were able to hang on for the win.” The Tigers now turn their attention to their week four match-up against the Vanderbilt Commodores.
