It was 42-21 in favor of NMSU entering the 4th quarter and BYU resigned itself for and 0-2 day and another loss. However, RB LJ Martin had other plans to get the Cougs in position to win. His strong day on the ground while ripping off chunks of yards (33/287/4) got the Cougs in position to get close. It was a 92 yard pick six by CB Jakob Robinson that cut it to 14. Coach TStep praised his senior CB "he doesn't step up there and we give up three it's game over." Back to back three and outs gave the Cougs plenty of time to continue to cut into the lead. Both teams got their first TD in OT but NMSU threw a costly pick six to end the game.
BYU had zero business winning this one but we'll certainly take it. Coach Oldschoola played well throughout and as always a class coach to play.
Controller through wall second edition for the season. We had a FG blocked for a win and now this and once again special teams. I had this game plain and simple – up 21 entering the fourth with the ball and kicking a FG for a 24-point lead…NOT SO FAST! I miss the FG – BYU scores, I go two three, and outs getting way too conservative way too early. BYU cranks up their ground game and scores 21 unanswered in the fourth quarter to force OT. We each get a TD on our opening drives and I wanted to go for two and the win but didn’t. NMSU gets it first in the second OT and promptly throw a pick-six to end the game. This was a tough pill to swallow for coach Oldschoola “We freaking had it - the missed FG turned the tide and BYU started throwing haymakers and we just didn’t do any counter punching. It was a very disappointing loss and the second OT loss on the season.
