In a season that has seen UNT drop 3 games by 4 or less points, 2 that they lead in the 4th quarter and the other were the game ended with the ball on the opponents 1 yard line, it was about damn time some late game luck went their way. This was far from a dominate performance for the Mean Green, the MTST offense racked up 362 passing yards, and their TE was a flat out bully at times with his great route running and physical punishment he brought to tacklers who were unlucky enough to be in his way. Still good contributions from special teams (made all of our kicks and Sides had some strong returns), a consistent running game (140+ yards with no run longer than 18 yards), great 3rd down play (4/5), and winning the 4th quarter (14-7) for the first time all season was a winning formula.

Murfreesboro, TN (AP) - In a game that MTSU needed to wing heading into conference play with a ton of momentum, winning 4 in a row, what they got was a comedy of errors late in the first half leading to a close loss to the visiting Mean Green of NT.
MTSU, up at 17-10 with just 90 seconds left to go in the first half, had the ball inside the Mean Green 15 yard line. The next two plays the Raiders would go backwards, creating a 3rd and 20 for themselves. MTSU would try to throw and underneath route to make the FG more manageable, but instead, threw a pick that the Mean Green would return all the way to the 3 yard line for first and goal. The Mean Green would punch it in two plays later.
With the game tied at 17, coach Dietz decided to try and drive the field with 1:09 left still on the first half clock, however, they quickly went three and out, punting back to UNT. On the ensuing punt, the UNT punt returner would return the punt all the way down inside the 10 yard line with just 12 seconds left in the first half. MTSU would hold strong here, and force the FG, but, what once was a lead with just 90 seconds to go in the half, and possibly a 2 score lead, was now a 3 point deficit heading into the locker room.
The second half would see the defenses make crucial stops on both sides. in the 4th quarter, MTSU had the ball on their final drive of the game to go down and tie. They drove all the way down to the 8 yard line and had first and goal with 18 seconds left in the game.
Unfortunately they could not punch it in and on the final play of the game, UNT picked off a desperation pass into the end-zone with no time remaining and it was all she wrote. Great game as always Pengy, GL the rest of the way.
