This one started off on the wrong foot for the Mustangs. After an early stop by the SMU defense was squandered as the ensuing punt was muffed at the 4 yard line and recovered by the Bears. The defense would put the team on their back again and manage a big stop and force the early FG. SMU stayed steady on offense driving down on the first drive only to have a TD taken away after a booth review and then they would miss a short FG and allow the Bears to take the early 6-0 lead. SMU managed another drive before half and stuck in a touchdown right before half to lead at half 7-6.
The Mustangs received the ball in the second half and drove down the field behind tough running from both Knighton and Johnson. The drive was capped with a TD and the eight point lead for the Mustangs. The defense would continue to pitch stops forcing a punt from the Bears and the SMU offense would capitalize again. This would put Cal against the wall and a failed fourth down conversion would seal the fate for the Bears.
