The Rice Owls traveled to Dallas, Texas where they were considered the home team playing at Gerald J. Ford Stadium (home of SMU) against the Jacksonville State Gamecocks in the Frisco Bowl. This was Rice's 10th bowl appearance in NDL school history and 2nd appearance under Coach RanDawg. RanDawg took Rice to an 8-4 record in season 10 while doing 7-5 this season.
The game started in Rice's favor, as HB#0 Dean Connors rushed 3 consecutive plays and had the Owls inside the red zone. Coach RanDawg decided to get fancy and run play action hoping to catch the Gamecocks sleeping, but they were ready and picked the pass off in the endzone. After a long drive, Jacksonville St would take the lead, 7-0.
The game would go back and forth as there seemed to be no real solution on defense for either team. Jacksonville State was able to run and pass the ball a will, while Rice put the ball in Connors' hands repeatedly for huge chunks of gains. Connor's ended the game with 24 carries, 299 yards, and 3 scores on the ground.
All the back and forth came down to 1 final deciding play late in the 4th quarter. With the game tied after a late Gamecock TD, Rice's WR/KR #6 Drayden Dickmann took the ensuing kickoff up the middle, 99 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. After Jacksonville State drove all the down inside the red zone, Rice was able to pick it off in the endzone to ice the bowl victory, the 16th bowl victory in Coach RanDawg's tenured career in the NDL, moving him to 16-4 in bowl games.
Rice also finishes the season with 8 wins, which is double what the experts expected them to have to begin the season.
The question on everyone's mind now is, will Coach RanDawg return to the Owls or find a new destination? The only 2 teams Coach RanDawg has ever coached in his 24 years in the NDL have been Rice (2 different stints) and the Houston Cougars for 22 years. Where will he be next season???
