Indiana opened up conference play with a visit from new Big 10 member UCLA. After a 0-0 deadlock first quarter where it seemed both teams were just feeling each other out, Indiana seem to find their grove putting up 14 points in the 2nd quarter. In the 3rd is when Indiana knew things was going their way...on a bad pitch the ball was scooped up by Indiana receiver K. Wiliams and he scooted 72 yards for a 21-0 lead. Indiana's defense would continue to play lights out in the 2nd half as they forced 3 turnovers and got to the QB 5 times on the evening. IU would add a score early in the 4th to put this one out of reach at 28-0.
UCLA was held to just 92 yards on the night as IU's front 7 was smothering and the DB's seemed to get to everything. This is by far the best the Hoosiers had played this season and improve their record to 2-2 (1-0) in conference
Tough game James, we seemed to get all the breaks GL the rest of the way
UCLA reunited with Coach Carman, from all the way back in NDL Season 1. They went a respectable 6-6 that season, and are hoping for somewhere near the same this season, though an improvement would be amazing.
This first game was an important one to build some confidence, and it could be said that if the ball bounced another way, or a first time ever seen QB pitch to a O Lineman, had gone another way, that it could have been a very different result. Still, a goose egg to open Big 10 play, doesn't bode well.
The first quarter was a defensive affair, which suited UCLA just fine.
Indiana then scored 14 in the second. And then the bounce came. A botched Indiana pitch was recovered by Indiana receiver K. Williams, who raced 72 yards to give the Hoosiers a 21-0 lead.
On another pitch, the RB was nowhere to be found, and an O Lineman came up with it, deep in Indiana territory, which would have put UCLA in a great spot for a comeback.
The UCLA defense also had a feeling they knew what was coming (almost to the confidence Michigan did in 2023 and 2022), but couldn't stop a double covered inside of the 3 wide side, from a 5 wide formation, which is the same the Bruins coaches in had seen at the end of their last second loss to Ank and Central Michigan while at Sam Houston State.
The UCLA offense on the other hand, didn't have a great go of it either. Three turnovers and 5 sacks. The defense also scored, which brought the game to 28-0.
