MOBILE, ALA - In a game marked by defensive tenacity and big plays, the Appalachian State Mountaineers emerged victorious, defeating the South Alabama Jaguars 17-10. Both teams battled back and forth, keeping the contest within reach until the final minutes of the fourth quarter.

South Alabama struck first with 2:23 left in the first quarter, as kicker Laith Marjan converted an 18-yard field goal to put the Jaguars up 3-0. However, Appalachian State quickly responded, with Michael Hughes nailing a 28-yard field goal just before the quarter ended to level the score at 3-3.

After a scoreless second quarter, the Jaguars found momentum early in the third. Running back Kentrel Bullock exploded for a 55-yard touchdown run at 4:24, giving South Alabama a 10-3 lead. The Mountaineers countered almost immediately. With 3:40 remaining in the third, quarterback Joey Aguilar connected with Kaedin Robinson for a stunning 88-yard touchdown pass on 3rd and long, tying the game at 10-10. Robinson led the Mountaineers' receiving corps with 98 yards on three receptions, showcasing his game-changing speed.

In the fourth quarter, Appalachian State finally pulled ahead. With just 1:33 left, Aguilar punched in a 2-yard rushing touchdown, and Hughes’ extra point put the Mountaineers up 17-10. Aguilar had a productive day, completing 17 of 22 passes for 300 yards, despite throwing two interceptions. He also contributed on the ground, rushing for the decisive touchdown.

Both defenses proved formidable, with each team forcing three turnovers. Appalachian State’s Ronald Clarke and Seth Robertson each grabbed interceptions, while Michael Fletcher led the Mountaineers’ pass rush with a sack. On the Jaguars’ side, linebacker Wesley Miller was a standout, recording a team-high 20 tackles and forcing two fumbles to keep Appalachian State’s offense in check.

In total offense, the Mountaineers outpaced South Alabama with 366 yards to the Jaguars’ 283. Appalachian State's edge in time of possession and third-down efficiency proved pivotal, allowing them to control the pace of the game and eventually seal the win.

The win brings Appalachian State one step closer to bowl eligibility, while South Alabama will look to regroup after a hard-fought battle.
