The Miami Hurricanes delivered a dominant performance on the road, defeating the Virginia Tech Hokies 38-14 in a heated rivalry game. With a balanced offensive attack and a stifling defense, Miami controlled the pace from the start, capitalizing on Virginia Tech’s mistakes and never allowing the Hokies to find their rhythm.
Miami’s offense tallied 329 total yards, with 131 on the ground and 198 through the air, sustaining drives and converting in the red zone with four touchdowns and one field goal. The Hurricanes’ defense was equally relentless, forcing four turnovers — all interceptions — and limiting the Hokies to just 202 yards of offense, including a mere 27 rushing yards.
Despite a few big plays, the Hokies struggled to maintain possession, holding the ball for only 10 minutes and converting just 2 of 7 third-down attempts. Virginia Tech’s offense had its brightest moment with a single red-zone touchdown but was ultimately stifled by Miami’s disciplined defense.
This victory strengthens Miami’s position in the ACC and marks a pivotal win in this storied rivalry, with the Hurricanes’ well-rounded performance showcasing their potential for the rest of the season.
For the Hokies...let's see if they can manage to bounce back from this dismal performance.
The Hurricanes would travel to Blacksburg, VA for this week 5 Rivalry Game and the Canes opening up their ACC Conference play. Both teams would come out very slow offensively to open the game. The Canes would go 3 and out their first two possessions and Virginia Tech would punt and then throw an interception on their second possession. Then the Canes would get going offensively. Cam Ward would capitalize on the interception to hit Elijah Arroyo on a 33 yard TD pass to jump out to a 7-0 lead. The defense would get the ball right back to the offense again this time on an interception by D'yoni Hill. It wouldn't take long for the Canes to capitalize as Damien Martinez would bust a 37 yard run for a TD and a 14-0 first quarter advantage. Virginia Tech would put together a nice drive to cut the lead to 14-7. Miami would hit a nice screen pass to Martinez for a 61 yard gain that would put them in scoring position again. Ward would hit Arroyo for their 2nd TD connection and a 21-7 lead. The Canes defense would force a 3 and out and the offense would be right back on the field. Miami would put together a 9 play drive that would end with Martinez scoring from 2 yards out to take a 28-7 halftime lead. "We played a great first half on all sides of the ball," said Coach Dealer, "we were making big plays. Also, scoring touchdowns instead of kicking field goals was big for our offense."
Miami's defense would start right where they left off in the 3rd quarter. This time Wesley Bissainthe would get an interception. The offense was unable to move the ball and would kick a 39 yard field goal for a 31-7 lead. Miami's defensive line would then get two sacks and force another 3 and out on the Hokies next possession. Miami would take 8 plays and Martinez would score his third TD of the game for a 38-7 advantage.
"This was a big win for our team today," said Dealer, "coming into Blacksburg is never an easy task. We got some big plays that helped us get the momentum and we never let go."
Miami will play Cal in their Week 6 game.
