The TCU Horned Frogs surged past the Houston Cougars on the road, turning a close game into a 40-14 rout thanks to a dominant defensive display led by star safety Bud Clark. Clark was the standout performer of the night, instrumental in forcing turnovers that shifted the momentum firmly in TCU's favor. He snagged three interceptions, one of which he returned 47 yards for a touchdown, and recovered a fumble. His heroics not only kept the Cougars' offense in check but also fueled TCU's scoring streak, as the Horned Frogs rattled off 26 unanswered points in the second half.
The game was evenly matched through the first two quarters, with both teams knotted at 14-14 at. However, the TCU defense was relentless, completely shutting down the Cougars' offense while the Horned Frogs piled on the points. The defensive unit did not allow Houston to score a single point in the second half, ultimately creating separation that the Cougars could not overcome.
Clark's play was one of several big moments for the Horned Frogs’ defense. Early in the third quarter, a perfectly placed punt by Jake Milliman pinned Houston at its own 1-yard line, setting up a rare safety that further added to TCU's lead. The Horned Frogs capitalized on every opportunity, with their defense scoring points directly and indirectly, leaving the Cougars with little room to breathe.
With this victory, TCU improves to 3-0 on the young season, showing resilience and a level of defensive intensity that will be hard to match in the weeks ahead. Bud Clark’s four-turnover performance served as a critical reminder of the Horned Frogs' playmaking potential, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. As TCU looks ahead, they carry momentum and confidence from a win that demonstrated their capacity to dominate both sides of the field.
In a clash that showcased the visiting TCU Horned Frogs’ dominance, the Houston Cougars fell 40-14 at home Sunday night, a scoreline that could have been even more lopsided if not for TCU head coach Zoot's decision to ease off the gas in the second half.
From the opening whistle, the Cougars struggled to find their rhythm, plagued by turnovers that have become their Achilles' heel. Houston quarterback Donovan Smith a week after throwing for 8 touchdowns without a mistake, was anything but sharp. In a shocking display, he tossed three interceptions within the first five drives, leading to a barrage of points for the Frogs.
"We were way too hyped up. I could sense it about a half hour before game time," Coach Rags lamented postgame. "The fix? We gotta figure that out. Will we take ‘em out for enchiladas and drinks? (jokingly) a couple of hours prior to kickoff, I dunno but we have to do something because we just play so tight here (at home)."
Rags continued his tirade, visibly frustrated with the team's performance. “We had a nice week of practice, brought in some teams to scrimmage and for the most part held our own, and boom, what does Donovan go out and do? A pee wee team could read defenses better than he did today. Unacceptable, from the staff to the players. Four interceptions and a fumble ain’t going to cut it. We had the ball for what, 7 damn minutes?”
The Cougars managed to keep the score respectable for a time tying the game in the 2nd quarter 14-14, but the Frogs’ relentless attack proved too much. TCU capitalized on Houston’s mistakes with punishing efficiency, scoring touchdowns at will while the Cougars’ offense sputtered.
In a moment of chaos, Houston's coach Yragha1 was nearly caught with a hot mic, and while his comments were indecipherable, it was clear the tension was palpable on the sidelines.
Despite the lopsided score, the Cougars showed glimpses of potential, but their inability to protect the ball and establish any offensive rhythm proved too costly. Coach Rags summed it up best: “Bxxx Fxxxxxx Sxxx.”
As the Cougars look to regroup after this disheartening defeat, the question looms: Can they find a way to relax and refocus before their next matchup? If not, the road ahead will be a bumpy one.
