The Fighting Illini lose another one. This time in dramatic fashion to rival Purdue.
Purdue was able to get a 3rd down TD pass in the opening drive of OT and Illini was not able to answer.
Altmeyer took a huge 11 yard sack on 2&10 on Illinois opening OT drive and it proved to be too much to overcome.
Kadin Feagin continues to be the only bright spot in this Illinois roster. The Junior RB rushed for just under 50 yards but caught 6 balls for over 150 yards and a TD. Along with 1 on the ground.
0-5 Illinois has defending National Champions Michigan next week.
Purdue used a late 4th quarter rally to force overtime against rival Illinois where they finally obtained their first win of the season by intercepting Luke Altmyer on the 1-yard line to preserve a 24-17 victory.
The Boilermakers were able to fire off the Purdue Cannon for the first time in years after the thrilling comeback victory. In a game that was heavily dominated for 3 quarters by Illinois, the Boilermakers were finally able to put together two later 4th quarter drives to tie it back up.
The first drive, while not successful after a failed 4th down try in the redzone, buried Illinois deep against the goal line with little room to maneuver. The Purdue defense was finally able to bottle up star Illini RB Kaden Feagin and force a quick 3 and out. Feagin had run wild on Purdue all morning through the ground and air but when it mattered most the Boilermakers secondary was able to tackle him for a loss and break up an almost completed pass with a bone jarring hit.
The stop allowed Purdue to get the ball back with a short field and time work. They methodically worked their way down the field behind their running game which allowed the clock to keep moving. Hudson Card eventually found RB Devon Mockobee wide open out of the backfield and he scampered in for the game tying 24-yard touchdown with 31 seconds left in the 4th.
The Boilermaker's defense was able to contain the Illini offense one last time at midfield forcing them to try a 54-yard field goal as time expired. Their kick came up short and Purdue would be gifted a 5th period to try and find their first win of the season.
Purdue went first in OT and hit pay dirt on the second play of their series. After a 2-yard run to start the period, Hudson Card hit a streaking Jahmal Edrine for a 23-yard touchdown pass and the 24-17 lead. Card saw the pressure coming from the Illinois defense and luckily Edrine was able to cut right through the seam of the defense and emerge wide open in the endzone for the quick strike and score.
On their turn, Illinois picked up an initial first down quickly before being stymied on the next three attempts. Facing a long fourth down call, the Illinois OC made a great play call which looked to break an Illini WR wide open in the end zone. However, it turned out to be a mirage as DB Kyndrich Breedlove emerged from what seemed like nowhere to make the play of the year on a leaping interception.
The pick from Breedlove ended the game and sealed the first victory of the season for Purdue. The Boilermakers move to 1-4 (1-1) on the year and begin to prepare for their upcoming night game against a powerhouse team in Oregon.
