In a result that absolutely no one saw coming, the upstart Purdue Boilermakers went into the crazy confines of Autzen Stadium and stunned the sold-out crowd with a 31-20 upset win over the #11 Oregon Ducks. On paper, Purdue was to have no shot at this game, but the Boilermakers defense rose to the test time and time again allowing the Purdue offense ample opportunity to work.
Purdue exploded in the second quarter with two big passing plays that opened up an early 17-3 lead for them. Hudson Card was able to find Jahmal Edrine down the seam for a contested catch that he managed to snag and deftly slip past the defender on his way to a 61-yard touchdown run. Additionally, Card hit RB Devon Mockebee on the next drive for a 45-yard pass down to the red zone that resulted in Card sneaking in a TD of his own from the one-yard line two plays later.
The offense didn't let up in the third quarter either as they put up another 16 points to keep the Ducks on their heels. Arguably the two biggest plays of the game happened in the third quarter. The first was a perfectly timed play action pass by Card to TE Luke Klare that put Purdue up 31-13. The Boilermakers were fresh off an interception of Dillon Gabriel in the Ducks territory and Coach Razor dialed up the call on 1st down for a 31-yard TD pass.
The second play came on defense after the Ducks picked off Card in the endzone and were backed up deep in Purdue territory. Oregon was within 11 points and was looking to capitalize on the turnover. However, the Purdue defense stepped up and an unblocked Defensive Linemen was able to chase down Gabriel in the endzone for a sack and safety.
That proved to be the final score of the game as the two teams proceeded to trade interceptions back and forth in the fourth quarter until the time expired. Purdue held on for the win against the Hall of Famer Coach Shel and energized their fanbase for what is hopefully a back half of the season run to a bowl game.
Next up for the Boilermakers is a trip to Evanston to take on the Northwestern Wildcats.
The Purdue Boilermakers defeated the Oregon Ducks 33-20 in a game marked by high passing yards and several turnovers. The game was never really close with Purdue taking a double digit lead in the 2nd quarter and expanding it to 31-13 mid 3rd.
Purdue quarterback Hudson Card threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns, though he was intercepted five times. The Boilermakers’ rushing attack, led by Devin Mockobee’s 104 yards on 23 carries, helped balance the offense. Purdue’s receivers also shined, with Jahmal Edrine recording 127 yards and a touchdown, and Luke Klare adding two more scores.
Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel passed for 384 yards and two touchdowns but struggled with six interceptions. His top target, Evan Stewart, collected 173 yards and a touchdown, while Tez Johnson added another 109 yards and a score. The Ducks’ run game was stymied, managing only -9 yards on nine carries.
