LUBBOCK, TX — The TCU Horned Frogs brought the heat in the Saddle Trophy Rivalry, defeating the Texas Tech Red Raiders 45-17 on the road. In a dominant performance led by quarterback Josh Hoover and a stifling defense, TCU secured the win and moved to 5-2 on the season.
Quarterback Josh Hoover proved to be a critical factor, completing 10 of his 18 passes for 206 yards and throwing four touchdowns without a single interception. Hoover’s highlight of the night came in the first quarter when he connected with wide receiver JP Richardson on a 77-yard touchdown pass, sending TCU’s sideline and fans into a frenzy.
On the ground, running back Cam Cook kept the chains moving, rushing for 126 yards to wear down the Red Raiders’ defense and provide crucial field position for TCU’s offense.
Defensively, TCU was relentless, forcing four turnovers that kept the Texas Tech offense on its heels. Safety Abe Camara was a standout, intercepting a pass and returning it 57 yards for a touchdown that helped TCU pull away. Camara also forced a fumble in the fourth quarter, recovering it himself to cap off an impressive night.
The win not only boosts TCU’s record but also sets the stage for a pivotal home game next week against the #2 Baylor Bears.
Texas Tech continued their conference slate with a home game against TCU in very unimpressive fashion. The Red Raiders came into this game needing to steer the train back on the tracks after disappointing performances against Baylor and Cincinnati but were unable to do so rolling out one of their worst performances this year.
QB Behren Morton threw (3) interceptions that put the team and a struggling defense in a terrible position to succeed. This has been a trend in conferences losses this year. In (3) conf. losses the Red Raiders have 9 combined turnovers and that’s been the biggest issue the team has faced. In the earlier portion of the year, they were able to get past the defensive issues with a high-powered offense but with the execution severely lacking there’s little hope.
The Red Raiders leaned on Tahj Brooks once again who had a season low 101 yards on the ground, but he was the only source of offense. After Morton’s early interceptions, the TCU defense locked down the Red Raiders which resulted in an increased number of check down throws to try to safely move the ball and re-take control of the pace of the game.
Tech’s inability to move the ball, the turnovers, etc. allowed TCU to control the flow of the game. They put up 21 points in the first quarter alone and from there, their playbook was wide open. The most concerning thing for Texas Tech beyond the turnovers was open field tackling. There are middle school football teams that execute better in open space.
We spoke with Coach AUChase who was visibly frustrated and disappointed. When asked about his thoughts on the game opened with “We look like crap out there. I want the fans to know that they deserve better, and I apologize because they cannot get their time wasted on us back. I do think it’s time for our coaching staff to look ourselves in the mirror and make some changes. At this point in the season, all of our season goals are off the table, and we likely won’t be invited back but I hope there’s enough pride in the building to want to play better for ourselves and teammates. We will look at the film and consider all possibilities. That may mean roster changes, coaching changes, or anything else really. Hats off to TCU
